Tipton was the starting point for the Butterfield Overland Mail route when it began in 1858. This was a very important stagecoach service. The route connected Tipton to St. Louis by train. Tipton is named after William Tipton Seely, a local businessman. He received the land for his service in the War of 1812.
From Tipton, stagecoaches traveled to Fort Smith, Arkansas. From there, they continued all the way to Los Angeles and San Francisco. The first trip from Tipton to San Francisco took place from September 16 to October 10, 1858. This stagecoach route started two years before the famous Pony Express. In 2023, this route was recognized as a national historic trail.

Tipton's Eight-Ball Water Tower
The city of Tipton has a very unique water tower. It is painted to look like a giant "eight-ball" from a pool table. This special tower was first painted in 1968.
This happened because Ewald Fischer, who was from Tipton, built his billiard table factory there. His company, Fischer Manufacturing Co., claimed to be the biggest maker of pool tables in the United States.
Later, another company bought the factory. The plant closed, and the water tower was repainted. But the people of Tipton really wanted their eight-ball back! So, it was painted again. Today, many people think Tipton's water tower is the largest eight-ball in the world.
