Tokka and Rahzar in Movies and TV
First Appearance in Film
In the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, the evil Shredder discovers how the Turtles became mutants. He learns about a special substance called "ooze" from TGRI (Techno-Global Research Industries). Shredder sends his Foot Soldiers to steal this ooze. They also kidnap Professor Jordan Perry, a top scientist from TGRI.
Shredder forces Professor Perry to use the ooze. He wants to create new mutants to fight the Turtles. Perry uses the ooze on a snapping turtle and a wolf. These animals were taken from the Bronx Zoo. This is how Tokka and Rahzar were created.
However, Professor Perry secretly changed the ooze. Because of this, Tokka and Rahzar had the intelligence of human babies. Shredder was angry. He wanted them to fight him to show who was boss. But the mutants thought "master" meant "mamma" and hugged him instead!
Shredder wanted to destroy them. But Professor Perry showed Shredder how strong they were. They could lift heavy objects easily. So, Shredder decided to keep them.
First Battle with the Turtles
Even though they weren't very smart, Tokka and Rahzar were incredibly strong. They were a big challenge for the Turtles. In their first fight, the Turtles were not ready. They barely escaped when trying to save Raphael and Dr. Perry.
During their escape, they trapped Tokka in a manhole. Michaelangelo teased Tokka and tickled his feet.
Later, Shredder let Tokka and Rahzar loose in the city. He told them to "go play." They caused a lot of damage, tipping over cars and knocking down telephone poles. Tokka even said to Rahzar, "Master said have fun!"
The Anti-Mutagen Plan
The next day, April O'Neil got a message from the Foot Clan. Shredder threatened to unleash Tokka and Rahzar in Central Park if the Turtles didn't meet him. Many people would get hurt. So, the Turtles and Splinter agreed to face Shredder.
Professor Perry had a plan. He worked with Donatello to create an anti-mutagen. This special liquid could turn the mutants back into normal animals. But the anti-mutagen had to be eaten.
In their second fight, Leonardo and Michaelangelo tricked Tokka and Rahzar. They froze the anti-mutagen into ice cubes. Then, they hid the cubes inside donuts. They offered the donuts to the mutants as a "pre-fight donut ritual."
Rahzar and Tokka ate some donuts. But Rahzar, despite his low intelligence, realized something was wrong. He crushed a donut and found the ice cube. They became very angry, thinking the Turtles tried to poison them.
Rahzar grabbed Michaelangelo and threw him through a wall. This interrupted a concert by Vanilla Ice at the Dockshore Club.
The Final Showdown
Inside the club, the fight continued. Dr. Perry told Donatello that carbon dioxide was needed for the anti-mutagen to work faster. The mutants were burping, which slowed the process.
The Turtles knocked Tokka and Rahzar down. Then, they sprayed fire extinguishers into the creatures' mouths. This gave them the carbon dioxide they needed. Finally, the antidote worked! Tokka and Rahzar turned back into a normal turtle and wolf. What happened to them after that is not known. They were likely sent back to the Bronx Zoo.
Tokka and Rahzar in TV Shows
1987 Animated Series
Tokka and Rahzar appeared in the 1987 animated series only once. This was in the seventh season episode "Dirk Savage: Mutant Hunter." In this version, Shredder created them by exposing zoo animals to mutagen years earlier.
These cartoon versions were smarter and could talk better. Rahzar even said to Tokka, "...You are my only friend." Tokka loved to eat, which led him into a trap set by Dirk Savage. He was captured after eating a huge buffet. Rahzar tried to save him, but it's not shown if they were reunited.
Their look in the cartoon was like their action figures. In this episode, their names were spelled Toka and Razar in the closed captions. Toka was voiced by Rob Paulsen and Razar by Townsend Coleman.
2012 Animated Series
In the 2012 animated series, Tokka and Rahzar have very different stories. They are never seen together in this series.
Rahzar's Story
Rahzar (voiced by Clancy Brown) starts as a famous martial artist named Chris Bradford. He was secretly trained by Shredder. Bradford believed Shredder's twisted version of events about Hamato Yoshi. He thought Yoshi betrayed their friendship.
Bradford tried to hunt down Yoshi through the Turtles. He tricked Michelangelo into a fake friendship. This made Michelangelo hate him. After failing to defeat the Turtles, Shredder was furious.
Bradford was exposed to mutagen near a Kraang bomb. He had been bitten by Shredder's pet dog. So, he turned into a large dog mutant. Michelangelo called him Dogpound because he was a dog who "pounded" them. Dogpound hated being a mutant. He was often beaten by Shredder and replaced by Karai as second-in-command.
Later, Dogpound fell into a mutagen vat again. He painfully mutated further into a skeletal, zombie-like werewolf mutant. Michelangelo renamed him Rahzar. He even felt a bit proud of his new form. Rahzar became good friends with Tiger Claw and was third-in-command of the Foot Clan.
In one episode, Rahzar joined the Turtles and Foot Clan to save the world. He fought Triceratons. But he saw Shredder kill Splinter, which doomed Earth. However, in a later episode, the Turtles created a new timeline. This saved Earth and brought Rahzar back to life.
When Shredder mutated into Super Shredder, Rahzar fought with him. He was defeated by Leatherhead, who dragged him underwater.
Later, Rahzar's body was brought back and resurrected by Kavaxas. He questioned his loyalty to Shredder. But Kavaxas took control of his body, calling him his "undead warrior." Rahzar fell into a pit to the netherworld and was not seen again.
Tokka's Story
In season four of the 2012 series, Tokka is a huge alien guardian. She protects the last piece of the Black Hole Generator on a fiery planet called Magdomar. This Tokka looks like Gamera and has similar powers. She is referred to as female because she is the parent of Chompy Picasso. Chompy is an alien turtle that Raphael adopts.
Lord Dregg steals the Black Hole Generator piece from Tokka. Tokka tries to get it back but is seemingly destroyed by a dwarf star explosion. Chompy survives and stays with the Turtles.
Later, Tokka is revealed to be alive. She crashes on Earth to find her baby, Chompy Picasso. But she sees how much Raphael cares for Chompy. So, she lets Raphael keep her baby. Raphael decides to keep Chompy, knowing the creature will eventually have to leave Earth.
Tokka and Rahzar in Comics
- Tokka and Rahzar appeared in two non-canon stories in the Turtle Soup comic series. In one, Tokka was April O'Neil's pet snapping turtle. He bit Raphael and became Tokka due to Raphael's mutagen blood. In another, Rahzar was a mutated dog created by Krang.
- In the IDW comic series, Tokka and Rahzar are mutants created by Hob. They are "recruits" for the Foot Clan.
Tokka and Rahzar in Video Games
Tokka and Rahzar appear in many Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video games.
Turtles in Time
They are in both versions of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time.
- In the arcade version, they are bosses on the pirate ship level.
- In the Super NES version, they are moved to the Technodrome level.
They fight together as a team. They can even team up in attacks. One move involves Tokka going into his shell while Rahzar rides on top like a skateboard. Their low intelligence from the movie is also shown. They often hit each other by accident, taking damage.
In the Super NES version, Tokka can use an ice breath attack. Rahzar uses a fire breath attack. When you defeat them, they turn back into normal animals. You can even attack Rahzar after he de-mutates, and he makes a 'Yelp' sound. The game uses their movie spelling, "Tokka" and "Rahzar." Before the fight, they say a quote from the movie: "Master say have fun." "FUN!"
Other Games
- They also appeared in the NES game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project. Here, you fight them separately. Rahzar appears before Shredder and uses an ice breath attack. Tokka is the boss of the rooftop level and uses a shield. Rahzar's name is spelled "Rahzer" in the game's ending.
- They return in the modern remake Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. They are again a double-boss on the pirate ship level.
- Rahzar also appears in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Legends.
