Krang (sometimes spelled Kraang) is a famous supervillain from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stories. He often appears in the 1987 animated TV show and its toys. You can also find him in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures comic books and many classic TMNT video games.

Krang first showed up in comics in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures vol. 1, #1. This comic was published by Archie Comics in August 1988. In the 1987 TV series, Pat Fraley was the voice of Krang.

Krang is still one of the main bad guys for the Ninja Turtles. He appears as General Krang in the 2012 IDW comic series. Krang also made his first live-action movie appearance in 2016. This was in the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Brad Garrett provided his voice for the movie.

David Wise created Krang. He was inspired by creatures called Utroms. Krang was made to give the Shredder special alien technology.

In the 2012 TV series, "the Kraang" is not one character. It is the name for a whole species of aliens.

Krang's Powers

In the last season of the 1987 cartoon, Krang showed he had some mind powers. He could hypnotize people who were not very strong-willed. He used this to make one of Lord Dregg's soldiers obey him and Shredder.

Krang and the Utroms

Krang's look was inspired by the Utroms. These creatures came from the original TMNT comic book. Utroms are usually peaceful, brain-like aliens.

Krang in IDW Comics

In the IDW Comics, Krang is both an Utrom and from a place called Dimension X. He was the son of Quanin, who used to be a leader of the Utroms. Quanin made himself Emperor and took over many other places.

His actions used up a lot of important resources on his home planet. They also caused people in Dimension X to fight back. This eventually led to the destruction of the Utroms' home. Krang was also a harsh leader, but he disagreed with his father's reckless ways.

Krang escaped with a few other Utroms through a portal to Earth. They landed on Burnow Island. There, he set up a secret base. His plan was to change Earth into a new home for his people. This process is called terraforming.

To make his army stronger, Krang worked with Baxter Stockman. Stockman ran a genetics research company. Krang gave him a special substance called Ooze. This Ooze could change Earth's creatures into mutants.

Through Stockman's experiments, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Splinter became intelligent, human-like mutants. The Turtles learned about Krang's plans to harm Earth. Their human friend April O'Neil helped them.

The Turtles, along with their ally the Fugitoid, stopped Krang. The Fugitoid was a scientist whose mind was trapped in a robot body. Krang had forced him to help build his terraforming machine, the Technodrome. The Foot Clan also helped stop Krang.

Krang was then taken to the Neutrinos for a trial. He was accused of many bad actions during his rule. While in prison, Krang tried to get rid of witnesses. But the Turtles stopped his plan.

Krang was found guilty and sent away from Dimension X forever. He was exiled to Earth. However, Leatherhead, one of Krang's past victims, was unhappy with this mild punishment. Leatherhead then attacked Krang.

The Utroms have a special body that lets them grow back. Krang was able to regenerate himself. He then took control of Leatherhead's body.

Krang in the 2003 Series

Krang did not appear as a main villain in the 2003 TV series. However, there was a small tribute to him in an episode. In "Secret Origins Part 3", Utroms are walking to go home. One complains about walking on tentacles. Another Utrom replies, "Oh, shut up, Krang!" This Krang was voiced by Wayne Grayson.

Krang also appears in the 2009 movie Turtles Forever. In this film, Krang, Shredder, and the 1987 Turtles travel to the 2003 universe. Shredder found his 2003 self, but Krang could not find his. This is because Krang exists in the 2003 universe as a regular, non-evil Utrom. Bradford Cameron voiced Krang in this movie.

The Kraang in the 2012 Series

An alien species based on both Krang and the Utroms appears in the 2012 Nickelodeon show. They are called The Kraang.

Kraang Prime is the leader of this group. He was a normal Utrom scientist. He created the mutagen that changed him into Kraang Prime. He then used his powers to control most of the other Utroms. They became part of his shared mind.

Krang in Film

  • Brad Garrett voices Krang in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. This was Krang's first official live-action appearance. Fred Armisen was originally going to voice Krang. However, he was busy with other projects and could not do it.
