Toledo (Oruro) is a small town located in the country of Bolivia. It is an important center for the Saucarí Province and also for the Toledo Municipality. The town sits high up, about 3,715 metres (12,188 ft) (which is over 12,000 feet) above sea level. It is nestled between two rivers, the Río Laq'a Jawira to the west and the Río Vinto Jahuira to the east. Both of these rivers flow into Lake Poopó.
Geography and Climate
Toledo is found in the eastern part of Bolivia's altiplano. The altiplano is a very high plateau in the Andes mountains. To the west of Toledo, you can see the Serranía de Huayllamarca mountains. To the east, there is the Cordillera Azanaques. This mountain range is part of the larger Cordillera Central of the Andes mountains.
Because of its high elevation, Toledo has a cool and somewhat dry climate. The average temperature in the region is around 10 °C (about 50 °F). The temperature does not change much throughout the year. It is usually coldest in June and July, around 6 °C (43 °F). It gets a bit warmer in November and December, reaching almost 14 °C (57 °F).
Toledo does not get much rain, only about 400 mm (16 inches) each year. There is a clear dry season from May to August, when it rains less than 10 mm (0.4 inches) per month. The wet season is short, from December to March, with about 60–85 mm (2.4–3.3 inches) of rain each month.
Roads and Travel
Toledo is about 37 kilometres (23 mi) (23 miles) southwest of Oruro. Oruro is the capital city of the Oruro Department.
A major national road, Ruta 12, passes right through Toledo. This road is 279 kilometres (173 mi) (173 miles) long. It starts at Pisiga near the border with Chile. From there, it goes northeast through towns like Sabaya, Huachacalla, and Ancaravi. Then it reaches Toledo, and continues on to Oruro and Caihuasi.
In Oruro, Ruta 12 connects with another important road, Ruta 1. Ruta 1 is a main north-south road. It goes from Desaguadero (on the border with Peru) through El Alto, Oruro, and Potosí, all the way to Bermejo (on the border with Argentina).
Near a place called Ocotavi, Ruta 12 also meets Ruta 4. This road heads east towards major cities like Cochabamba, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, and Puerto Suárez. Puerto Suárez is on the border with Brazil. These roads make it easier to travel to and from Toledo.
