Tomáš Kalas was born in Olomouc, Czech Republic. He began his football journey with his hometown club, Sigma Olomouc. He played his first professional game on May 5, 2010, in a 2–0 win against Slovan Liberec.

On July 7, 2010, Tomáš signed with Premier League champions Chelsea. The transfer fee was around £5.2 million. However, it was agreed that he would stay at Sigma Olomouc for the 2010–11 season. Tomáš joined Chelsea's reserve team in February 2011. He made his debut for their reserve team in a 2–2 draw against Aston Villa.

Playing on Loan

Time at Vitesse

On August 22, 2011, Tomáš joined the Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem on a loan for the 2011–12 season. He played his first game for Vitesse on September 17, 2011, in a big 5–0 win.

In March 2012, Tomáš said he was happy at Vitesse and hoped to stay there longer. On May 17, 2012, he scored his first goal as a professional player for Vitesse. They won that game 3–1.

Tomáš rejoined Vitesse for another loan season in July 2012. He also extended his contract with Chelsea until 2017. He scored his first league goal of that season for Vitesse on September 16, 2012.

Season with Chelsea

In July 2013, Chelsea's manager, José Mourinho, said Tomáš would stay with Chelsea and try to earn a spot in the team. Tomáš played in three pre-season games for Chelsea. However, he then broke a bone in his leg, which stopped him from playing with the main team for a while.

After recovering, Tomáš made his first official game for Chelsea on October 29, 2013. He came on as a substitute in a 2–0 win against Arsenal in the League Cup. He also made his Champions League debut on March 18, 2014, against Galatasaray.

On April 27, 2014, Tomáš played his first Premier League game for Chelsea. He started against Liverpool and played the whole game. Chelsea won 2–0, which helped them stay in the race for the league title.

Loan to FC Köln

On June 11, 2014, Tomáš was loaned to the German club 1. FC Köln for the 2014–15 season. He played two games for their reserve team, 1. FC Köln II, but did not play for the main team. Tomáš later said he didn't know why he wasn't playing much there.

On July 13, 2015, Tomáš returned to Middlesbrough for a second loan spell. He also signed a new three-year contract with Chelsea. He continued to play as a right-back for Middlesbrough. The team was promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season.

After a successful loan, Bristol City signed Tomáš permanently on July 1, 2019. He signed a four-year contract. This was a club-record fee for Bristol City. He scored his first goal for Bristol City on September 12, 2020, in a 2–1 win.
