Tomáš Kalas was born in Olomouc, Czech Republic. He began his football career with his hometown club, Sigma Olomouc. He played his first game for them on May 5, 2010, in a 2–0 win against Slovan Liberec.

On July 7, 2010, Kalas signed with Premier League champions Chelsea. The transfer fee was about £5.2 million. It was agreed that he would stay at Sigma Olomouc for the 2010–11 season. Kalas joined Chelsea's reserve team in the second half of the 2010–11 season. He played his first reserve team game on February 21, which was a 2–2 draw against Aston Villa.

Loans to Vitesse

On August 22, 2011, Kalas moved to the Dutch club Vitesse on a loan for the 2011–12 season. He was given the number 2 jersey. He played his first game for Vitesse on September 17, 2011, in a big 5–0 win against Roda JC Kerkrade.

In March 2012, Kalas said he was happy playing for Vitesse. He hoped to stay there for another year. He also extended his contract with Chelsea until the summer of 2017. On May 17, 2012, Kalas scored his first professional goal for Vitesse against RKC Waalwijk. Vitesse won that game 3–1.

He rejoined Vitesse for another loan spell for the 2012–13 season. On September 16, 2012, Kalas scored his first goal of that season for Vitesse in a 3–0 victory over FC Groningen.

The 2013–14 Season

However, Kalas then suffered a broken fibula bone during training. This injury kept him from playing with the first team for a while. Even when he played less later on, the manager said Kalas was still important for the team's goal of getting promoted to the Premier League. On April 19, 2016, Kalas played his last game for Middlesbrough. He came on as a substitute in a draw against Burnley.
