Tommaso Rocchi (born 19 September 1977) is an Italian former footballer. He played as a striker, which means he was mainly focused on scoring goals. Tommaso spent a big part of his career playing for Lazio. He is the sixth highest goal scorer for that club! He also played three times for the Italian national team.

Tommaso Rocchi's Football Journey

How Tommaso Started Playing Football

Tommaso Rocchi was born in Venice, Italy. He started playing football in his hometown when he was just nine years old. He joined the youth team of Venezia.

In 1994, when he was 17, Tommaso moved to a very famous club called Juventus. He won a youth league title with Juventus. He was part of the first team in the 1995–96 season when they won the Champions League! However, he didn't play in any official matches for the main team and soon left the club.

After Juventus, Rocchi played for several smaller clubs in Italy. These included Pro Patria, Fermana, Saronno, and Como. He played in 121 matches and scored 36 goals during this time. In 2000, he got a chance to play in a higher league, Serie B, with Treviso.

Playing for Empoli

After playing for Treviso, Rocchi moved to Empoli in 2001. Empoli was also in Serie B at the time. He played over 100 matches for Empoli and scored 29 goals.

Sixteen of his goals came when Empoli was in Serie A, which is the top football league in Italy. He scored an important winning goal against Inter Milan in January 2004. Just a week later, he scored three goals (a "hat-trick") against his old club, Juventus, in a thrilling 3–3 draw!

Becoming a Star at Lazio

Because of his great performances at Empoli, Lazio signed Tommaso Rocchi in 2004. This was a big step up for him.

Rocchi scored his first goal for Lazio on 22 September 2004 against Brescia. He had a fantastic first season, scoring a hat-trick against Lecce. He finished the season with 13 goals in 35 league games. He also scored twice in the 2004–05 UEFA Cup, which was his first time playing in a European competition.

One of his most memorable goals was the third goal in a 3–1 win against Roma in the "Derby della Capitale" (the Rome derby). This is a very important match for fans in Rome!

Rocchi formed a strong partnership with his teammate Paolo Di Canio. They often helped each other score goals and had a good relationship. After Di Canio left in 2006, Rocchi became the main striker for Lazio. He also had a great partnership with Goran Pandev. They were the top goal scorers for Lazio for three seasons in a row.

In the 2005–06 season, Rocchi scored his personal best of 16 league goals. Lazio finished sixth in the league. The next season, 2006–07, Lazio started with a penalty of eleven points deducted. This meant they had to work extra hard. But the team improved a lot, and the penalty was reduced. Lazio ended up finishing third in the league and qualified for the UEFA Champions League, Europe's biggest club competition!

In the 2007–08 season, Rocchi played in the UEFA Champions League for the first time. He scored a very important winning goal against Werder Bremen. He finished that season with 14 goals in Serie A. He was also often the captain of Lazio when the regular captain was injured. In March 2008, he scored his fourth goal in the Rome derby, helping Lazio win 3–2 against Roma.

The 2008–09 season was a bit tougher for Rocchi. He missed the first two months due to an injury he got while playing for Italy. He scored 9 goals that season, which was his lowest in six years. However, Lazio won the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) that year! They beat Sampdoria in a penalty shootout. Rocchi missed his penalty, but he later scored the winning goal in the Italian Super Cup final against Inter Milan. This season was also his first as the official team captain.

By the end of the 2008–09 season, Rocchi had played over 200 matches for Lazio and scored 83 goals. He wanted to reach 100 goals, a goal only four other players had achieved for the club. He even changed his shirt number from 18 to 9, which was the number worn by those legendary goal scorers.

Moving to Inter Milan

On 4 January 2013, after nine years with Lazio, Rocchi joined Inter Milan. He signed a contract until the end of the 2012–13 season.

He scored his first goal for Inter on 7 April 2013 against Atalanta. Ten days later, he made his first assist (a pass that leads to a goal) for a teammate. On 21 April, Rocchi scored his second goal for Inter, which was the winning goal against Parma.

Playing for Italy

Tommaso Rocchi played for Italy's youth teams many times.

In August 2006, after Italy won the FIFA World Cup, the new national team coach called Rocchi up to the senior squad. This was a reward for his excellent goal-scoring record in Serie A.

He played his first match for the Italian national team against Croatia. He played two more matches for Italy as they tried to qualify for Euro 2008, but he didn't make the final team for the tournament.

Rocchi was chosen to play for Italy's Olympic team at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He was one of the "overage" players allowed in the mostly under-23 team. He scored a goal in his first Olympic match against South Korea on 10 August, helping Italy win 3–0. However, he got injured during that match, breaking a bone in his leg, which meant he had to leave the tournament early.
