Tommaso Rocchi (born May 19, 1979) is a former Italian footballer. He played as a striker, which means he was a forward player whose main job was to score goals. Tommaso Rocchi spent a big part of his career playing for Lazio. He is one of the top goal scorers in Lazio's history. He also played three times for the Italian national team.

Tommaso Rocchi's Club Career

Starting Out in Football

Tommaso Rocchi was born in Venice, Italy. He started playing football in his hometown when he was just nine years old. He joined the youth teams of Venezia. In 1994, he moved to the famous club Juventus. With Juventus, he won a youth league title called the Primavera. Even though Juventus won the Champions League in the 1995–96 season, Rocchi did not play for their main team. He soon left the club to gain more experience.

After leaving Juventus, Rocchi played in lower Italian leagues, mainly Serie C. He played 121 matches and scored 36 goals for teams like Pro Patria, Fermana, Saronno, and Como. In 2000, he got a chance to play in Serie B with Treviso.

Playing for Empoli

From Treviso, Rocchi moved to Empoli, which was also in Serie B at the time. He played over 100 games for Empoli and scored 29 goals. Sixteen of these goals were scored in Serie A, Italy's top league. Rocchi had some great games during the 2002–03 and 2003–04 seasons. He scored the winning goal against Inter Milan in January 2004. A week later, he scored three goals against his old club, Juventus, in an exciting 3–3 draw.

Time at Lazio

Rocchi's strong performances led to him joining Lazio for the 2004–05 season. His first goal for Lazio came in September 2004 against Brescia. He had an amazing game where he scored three goals against Lecce. Rocchi finished his first season with Lazio with 13 goals in 35 league games. He also scored twice in the 2004–05 UEFA Cup, which was his first time playing in a European competition. A very important moment was when he scored the third goal in a 3–1 win against AS Roma in the Derby della Capitale, a big local derby match.

Rocchi became a key player for Lazio. He formed a strong partnership with teammate Paolo Di Canio. They often helped each other score goals and had a good relationship. After Di Canio left in 2006, Rocchi became the main striker for the club. He also had a great partnership with Goran Pandev. Together, they were Lazio's top goal scorers for three seasons in a row.

In the 2005–06 season, Rocchi scored his personal best of 16 league goals. Lazio finished sixth that season. In the 2006–07 season, Lazio started with a points deduction, but the team improved a lot. Rocchi scored 16 goals again, and Lazio finished third, which meant they qualified for the UEFA Champions League.

The 2007–08 season was Rocchi's first time playing in the UEFA Champions League. He scored an important winning goal against Werder Bremen. He finished this season with 14 Serie A goals. He often wore the captain's armband for Lazio. In 2008, Rocchi signed a new contract that would keep him at the club until 2013. In March 2008, he scored his fourth goal in the Derby della Capitale in a 3–2 win against AS Roma.

The 2008–09 season was a bit tougher for Rocchi. He missed the first two months due to an injury he got while playing for Italy. He scored 9 goals that season, which was his lowest in six years. However, Lazio won the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) that year. Rocchi also scored the winning goal in the Italian Super Cup final against Inter Milan. This season was also his first as the official team captain.

By the end of the 2008–09 season, Rocchi had played over 200 games for Lazio and scored 83 goals. He wanted to reach 100 goals for the club, a goal only a few players had achieved. He even changed his shirt number from 18 to 9, which was worn by many of Lazio's top goal scorers before him.

Moving to Inter Milan

On January 4, 2013, after nine years with Lazio, Rocchi joined Inter Milan. He signed a contract until the end of the 2012–13 season. He was given the number 18 shirt.

He scored his first goal for Inter on April 7, 2013, against Atalanta. Ten days later, he provided his first assist for Inter. On April 21, Rocchi scored his second goal of the season, which was the winning goal against Parma.

Tommaso Rocchi's International Career

Tommaso Rocchi played for Italy's youth teams many times.

In August 2006, after Italy won the FIFA World Cup, the new national team coach, Roberto Donadoni, called Rocchi up to the senior squad. This was because of his excellent goal-scoring record in Serie A.

He made his debut for the senior Italian team against Croatia. Rocchi played two more matches for the national team before the Euro 2008 tournament, but he was not chosen for the final squad.

He was selected as one of the older players for Italy's Olympic team to play at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He scored a goal in his first game against South Korea on August 10, helping Italy win 3–0. However, he got injured during that match, breaking a bone in his leg, which forced him to leave the tournament early.
