Tony Haynes: A Songwriting Journey
Tony Haynes began his professional music career in 1981. He started writing songs with Al McKay, who was a member of the famous band Earth, Wind & Fire. Together, they wrote songs for groups like The Spinners and A Taste of Honey.
Early Success and Collaborations
In 1982, Tony started working with Maurice White, another member of Earth, Wind & Fire. This led to his first gold album, Powerlight, by Earth, Wind & Fire, which featured their song "The Speed Of Love." He also wrote songs for Philip Bailey's solo albums. Tony even worked with David Foster on a song for Jennifer Holliday.
In 1984, Tony wrote "Drive Me Wild" for the TV show Fame. He also collaborated with Japanese artists and with Louis Johnson from the band Brothers Johnson. During this time, his songs were recorded by many artists, including The Temptations and George Duke.
Big Hits and Platinum Records
A major success for Tony came in 1985 with the song "Hyperactive". He wrote this song with Robert Palmer and Dennis Nelson. It appeared on Palmer's album Riptide, which sold millions of copies, becoming Tony's first multi-platinum album. The song was also featured in the movie The Bedroom Window.
From 1985 to 1989, Tony continued to be a sought-after lyricist. He co-wrote "Under the Influence" for Vanity, which became a top ten hit. He also wrote songs for The Pointer Sisters, Bobby Brown, and Stephanie Mills.
Number One Songs and Movie Soundtracks
Tony Haynes achieved his first number-one single in 1989 with "She's On the Left". This song was recorded by Jeffrey Osborne and was a big hit. Tony also had songs featured in movies like Fatal Beauty and My Stepmother Is an Alien. He even wrote a song for the video game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
In the 1990s, Tony partnered with Laney Stewart. They wrote songs for many artists, including Evelyn Champagne King, Karyn White, and Chante Moore. Their song "Never Let Them See You Sweat" for Go West was in the movie White Men Can't Jump. Tony also co-wrote "Get Away" for Bobby Brown, which became a number-one dance song.
