The Top of the Rockies is a super cool road in Colorado, USA. It's known as a National Scenic Byway, which means it's a special route with incredible natural beauty. Most of this byway is really high up, more than 9,000 feet (about 2,743 meters) above sea level! That's why it's called "Top of the Rockies." This amazing road takes you over Tennessee Pass and leads to the historic mining town of Leadville, Colorado.

Driving the Byway

This scenic byway offers an exciting adventure through the mountains. It starts in the beautiful town of Aspen. From there, you'll travel east on State Highway 82.

Mountain Passes and Lakes

Your journey takes you over Independence Pass. This pass offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. You'll also drive near the sparkling Twin Lakes. These lakes are a perfect spot to stop and enjoy the scenery. The road then continues just north of the small town of Granite.

Heading North to Leadville

After Granite, the route turns north onto U.S. Route 24. This part of the byway leads you right through Leadville. Leadville is famous for being the highest incorporated city in the United States! From Leadville, the byway continues all the way to Interstate 70 (I-70).

The Fremont Pass Spur

There's also a special side trip, or "spur," of the byway. This spur follows the entire length of State Highway 91. It goes from Leadville to Copper Mountain. Along this route, you'll cross Fremont Pass. It's another chance to see more stunning mountain landscapes.

As you travel the Top of the Rockies Byway, you'll find many interesting spots.

  • Tennessee Pass — This is a mountain pass located right in the heart of the Rockies. It's a great place to experience the high-altitude environment.
  • Leadville, Colorado — As mentioned, Leadville is the highest city in the U.S. It has a rich history from its mining days. You can explore its historic downtown area.
  • Valley of the Ghosts — This unique area is home to three old ghost towns. These are towns that were once busy but are now mostly deserted. They offer a glimpse into the past.
  • Mount Elbert — This is the highest mountain peak in all of Colorado! It's a majestic sight and a popular spot for hikers.
