James Torrey Smith (born January 26, 1989) is a former professional football player. He played as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) for eight seasons. Torrey played college football for the Maryland Terrapins. The Baltimore Ravens picked him in the 2011 NFL draft. He also played for the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Carolina Panthers. Smith won two Super Bowl championships. He won Super Bowl XLVII with the Ravens and Super Bowl LII with the Eagles.

Early Life and High School Football
Torrey Smith was born on January 26, 1989. He grew up in Colonial Beach, Virginia, and Fredericksburg, Virginia. Torrey was the oldest of seven children. He helped his mother with chores and earned good grades in school.
He went to Stafford Senior High School. There, he played basketball as a guard. He also played football in many different positions. Torrey was a quarterback, running back, wide receiver, cornerback, kickoff returner, and punt returner. His coach, Roger Pierce, said Torrey could do amazing things for the team. In his senior year, Torrey scored 12 touchdowns by running the ball. He also returned six kickoffs for touchdowns during his high school career.
College Football Career
Torrey Smith played college football at the University of Maryland. He was a very important player for their team.
Starting at Maryland
Torrey did not play in the 2007 season. He was a "redshirt" player, meaning he practiced but didn't play in games. This helped him learn the wide receiver position. His teammates noticed he was eager to learn.
2008 Season Highlights
In the 2008 season, Torrey played in all 13 games. He started in the last six games. He was also a special teams player, returning kickoffs. He caught 24 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns. Torrey scored his first college touchdown against #20 Clemson. He set a school record for kickoff return yards for a freshman. He also blocked a punt against Virginia Tech.
Torrey had a great game against #21 Boston College. He gained 245 total yards and caught eight passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. In the 2008 Humanitarian Bowl, he returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. This was a record for that bowl game. He ended the season with 1,089 kickoff return yards. This set a new record for the Atlantic Coast Conference.
2009 Season Achievements
For the 2009 season, Torrey played in all twelve games. He started ten of them. He caught 61 passes for 824 yards and five touchdowns. He also returned 51 kickoffs for 1,309 yards and two touchdowns. His kickoff return yards broke his own ACC record from the year before. Torrey was one of the best players in the nation for total yards gained.
He had a huge game against Division I FCS James Madison. He caught eight passes, ran for a touchdown, and returned an 81-yard kickoff for a touchdown. Against Wake Forest, he returned six kickoffs for 194 yards. He also caught a career-high ten passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. After the season, he was named to the All-ACC second team as a wide receiver and return specialist.
2010 Season and Records
Torrey returned for the 2010 season. He wanted to improve his chances for the NFL draft. He also wanted to finish his degree. He scored two touchdowns against West Virginia. Sports Illustrated saw him as a top player for the 2011 NFL draft.
He had a record-setting game against #23 North Carolina State. He caught 14 passes for 224 yards and four touchdowns. This helped Maryland win 38–31. In this game, Torrey set a new school record for career all-purpose yards. His four touchdown catches in one game also set a school record. He became only the second Maryland receiver to gain over 1,000 yards in a single season. After the season, he was named to the All-ACC first team. He then decided to enter the 2011 NFL draft.

Baltimore Ravens (2011–2014)
The Baltimore Ravens picked Torrey Smith as the 58th overall player in the 2011 NFL draft. He was known for his speed.
Rookie Season (2011)
In his first season, Torrey had an amazing game against the St. Louis Rams. He scored three touchdowns on his first three catches. This made him the first NFL rookie to do so in one quarter. He finished that game with 152 receiving yards. He also caught a game-winning touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Torrey set Ravens rookie records with 50 catches and 7 receiving touchdowns.
Super Bowl Champion (2012)
Before a game against the New England Patriots, Torrey's younger brother passed away. Despite this, Torrey chose to play. He led his team with 6 catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns. The Ravens won that game 31–30.
In the playoffs, Torrey caught two long touchdown passes against the Denver Broncos. The Ravens won that game in double overtime. The Ravens then went on to win Super Bowl XLVII. They defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34–31. This was Torrey's first Super Bowl ring.
Later Ravens Seasons (2013–2014)
In 2013, Torrey became the Ravens' main receiver. He had his first season with over 1,000 receiving yards. He finished the year with 65 catches for 1,128 yards. In 2014, he scored a career-high 11 touchdown catches. He helped the Ravens reach the playoffs again. After the 2014 season, Torrey left the Ravens. He thanked the team and fans in a letter. He held a Ravens franchise record for yards per catch.
San Francisco 49ers (2015–2016)
In 2015, Torrey Smith signed with the San Francisco 49ers. He played alongside his former Ravens teammate, Anquan Boldin. In his first game with the 49ers, they won 20–3. He caught a 75-yard touchdown pass in another game. He finished the 2015 season leading the league in yards per reception. In 2016, Torrey suffered a concussion and was placed on injured reserve. He was released by the 49ers in March 2017.
Philadelphia Eagles (2017)
In 2017, Torrey Smith signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. He caught his first touchdown with the Eagles in a 34–7 win. The Eagles had a great season, finishing 13–3. They earned the top spot in their conference.
The Eagles made it to Super Bowl LII. They defeated the New England Patriots. Torrey caught five passes in the Super Bowl. This earned him his second Super Bowl ring.
Carolina Panthers (2018)

After his football career, Torrey Smith has focused on helping others.
Torrey Smith Foundation
Torrey founded the Torrey Smith Foundation (TSF). This non-profit group helps young people who are at risk. It also supports those affected by domestic violence. The foundation hosts many events. These include back-to-school activities, STEM camps, and holiday gift programs. TSF aims to educate youth and raise awareness about important issues.
Community Involvement
Torrey has been very active in his community. In 2013, he worked as an intern for Maryland Representative Elijah Cummings. He also represented the Ravens at the Maryland State capital. In 2016, he was nominated for the Walter Payton award. This award recognizes NFL players for their community work.
In 2019, his hometown of Colonial Beach, Virginia, named a park after him. He had helped fund its restoration. In 2020, the Library of Virginia honored Torrey. They named him one of their Strong Men & Women in Virginia History. This was for his ongoing charity work.
Torrey also joined Rose Health in 2020. This company focuses on mental health. He became an investor and ambassador. He believes the Rose app can help people build mental health strength.
Personal Life
Torrey Smith is married to Chanel Williams. They met at the University of Maryland. Chanel was a track athlete there. They got married on July 11, 2013. They have three children: Torrey "TJ" Jeremiah, Kameron James, and Kori Lynn Smith.
In 2012, Torrey's younger brother, Tevin Chris Jones, passed away in a motorcycle accident. Torrey chose to play in the game the next day. He had an amazing performance to honor his brother. Torrey has also started a college scholarship fund. It helps young people from Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. This fund is in honor of his late brother.
