James Torrey Smith (born January 26, 1989) is a former professional football wide receiver. He played in the National Football League (NFL) for eight seasons. Torrey played college football for the Maryland Terrapins. The Baltimore Ravens selected him in the 2011 NFL draft. He also played for the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Carolina Panthers. Smith is a two-time Super Bowl champion. He won Super Bowl XLVII with the Ravens and Super Bowl LII with the Eagles.

Early Life and High School Football

Torrey Smith was born on January 26, 1989. He grew up in Colonial Beach, Virginia, and Fredericksburg, Virginia, with his mother, Monica Jenkins. As the oldest of seven children, Torrey helped his single mother with chores. He also earned good grades in school.

Torrey attended Stafford Senior High School. There, he played both basketball and football. In football, he played many different positions. These included quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and cornerback. He was also a kickoff returner and punt returner. His coach, Roger Pierce, knew Torrey could make big plays.

During his senior year in 2006, Torrey had 815 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. He also returned six kickoffs for touchdowns during his high school career. He earned many honors for his skills. Torrey also enjoys fishing in his free time.

Choosing a College Team

Many colleges were interested in Torrey Smith. These included Maryland, Penn State, and Virginia Tech. ESPN thought he was a "do-it-all prospect." They believed he would be a great wide receiver because of his size and speed.

The Virginia team was interested but did not offer him a scholarship right away. They wanted to see if he had fully recovered his speed after a basketball injury. Torrey proved his speed at a combine. Maryland then offered him a scholarship, which he accepted. He wanted to show Virginia that he was fully healed and ready to play.

College Career at Maryland

Learning the Ropes (2007-2008)

Torrey Smith spent his first year at Maryland in 2007 as a redshirt. This meant he practiced with the team but did not play in games. He was named the scout team player of the year. He worked hard to learn the wide receiver position, which was new to him.

In the 2008 season, Torrey played in all 13 games. He started in the last six games. He was also a key player on special teams as a kickoff returner. He caught 24 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns. Torrey set a school record for kickoff return yards for a freshman. He also blocked a punt against Virginia Tech.

One exciting moment was when he returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown in the 2008 Humanitarian Bowl. This was a record for that bowl game. By the end of the season, Torrey had set a new Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) record for single-season kickoff return yards with 1,089 yards. He led his team with 1,425 total yards.
