Tréguier (pronounced "Treg-yay") is a charming port town in France. It is located in the Côtes-d'Armor area of Brittany, which is in northwestern France. Tréguier is also the main town of the Trégor province.

Where is Tréguier Located?
Tréguier is about 36 kilometers (22 miles) northwest of Saint-Brieuc by road. The town's port is found about 5.5 miles (9 kilometers) from the English Channel. It sits where two small rivers meet to form the Tréguier River. This makes it a great spot for boats and ships.
A Look Back at Tréguier's History
Tréguier has a long and interesting history, going all the way back to the 500s. It first grew around a monastery, which is a place where monks live and work. This monastery was started by a person named Saint Tudwal.
Tréguier's Early Days
In the 800s, Tréguier became the center of a bishopric. This means it was an important religious area led by a bishop. However, this bishopric was later ended in 1790.
Tréguier in the 20th Century
During World War I, the United States Navy set up a special air base in Tréguier. This base opened in November 1918 and was used for seaplanes. Seaplanes are aircraft that can take off and land on water. The base closed soon after the war ended.
Famous People Connected to Tréguier
A person named Count Stephen of Tréguier was an important figure in history. He became the second Earl of Richmond, a noble title created by William the Conqueror.

Breton Language in Tréguier
The Breton language is a traditional language spoken in Brittany. In 2008, about 11.78% of young children in primary schools in Tréguier attended schools where they learned in both French and Breton.

Tréguier Cathedral
The Tréguier Cathedral is a very old and impressive building. It was built in the 1300s and 1400s. What makes it special is that it has three towers over its middle section, called the transept. One of these towers has a beautiful, tall spire.
Inside the cathedral, you can find a grand monument to Ivo of Kermartin (also known as Saint Yves). He was a very important person in the cathedral's history and is the patron saint of lawyers. The cathedral was largely built because of his efforts.
Saint Yves and the Pardon Festival
The Pardon of Saint Yves is a big religious festival held in Tréguier. It brings together lawyers and judges from all over the world because Saint Yves is their patron saint.
Next to the cathedral, there is a cloister, which is a covered walkway around a courtyard. This cloister was built in 1468 and has lovely arched designs.
Statues and Memorials
Near the cathedral, you will see a statue of Ernest Renan. He was a famous writer and thinker who was born in Tréguier. When his statue was first shown in 1903, it caused some discussion because it also included a statue of the goddess Athena. You can also visit the house where Renan was born, which is now a museum.
Another important monument is the Pleureuse de Tréguier, which is a war memorial designed by Francis Renaud. There is also a memorial to Anatole Le Braz in the jardin du poète, a garden dedicated to poets.
The Port and Harbour
The port and harbor in Tréguier are very scenic. They have many charming restaurants and crêperies (places that serve thin pancakes) right by the water. You can enjoy amazing views of the boats and the quayside.
What Tréguier's Economy Was Like
In the past, Tréguier was a busy place for different types of work. People used to saw wood, build boats, and process flax (a plant used to make linen). The town also traded in things like grains, cloth, and potatoes. The port was important for fishing and for trading goods along the coast and with other countries.
Religious Celebrations
Tréguier is part of two important religious events.
Tro Breizh
Tro Breizh means "Tour of Brittany" in the Breton language. It is a Catholic pilgrimage route. This pilgrimage connects the towns of the seven founding saints of Brittany, and Tréguier is one of them, as it is the town of Saint Tudwal.
Pardon of Saint Yves
The Pardon of Saint Yves is a very important religious festival in Tréguier. Since Saint Yves is the patron saint of the legal profession, this event attracts Catholic lawyers and judges from all over the world.
Famous People from Tréguier
Many notable people were born in Tréguier or had strong connections to the town:
- Ernest Renan (1823–1892): A famous philosopher, scholar of the Bible, and historian of religion.
- Ernest Hello (1828–1885): A well-known critic and writer.
- Hervaeus Natalis (around 1260–1323): He was the 14th leader of the Dominican Order.
- Joseph Savina (1901–1983): A talented designer and sculptor who lived and worked in Tréguier.
