The Treaty of Paris was an important peace agreement signed on June 25, 1802. It was made between France, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, and the Ottoman Empire, led by Sultan Selim III. This treaty officially ended the French campaign in Egypt and Syria. It also brought back friendly relations between France and the Ottoman Empire to how they were before the war.
This agreement also supported the Treaty of Amiens, which was signed earlier in 1802. The Treaty of Amiens was a peace deal between France and the United Kingdom. It followed the surrender of French troops in Egypt to the British forces.
Why Was This Treaty Needed?
Before the war, relations between the Ottoman Empire and France were not good. Things got difficult when France took over the Ionian Islands in 1797. French agents then spread ideas against the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans.
When France invaded Egypt in 1798, the Ottomans declared war. They then formed an alliance with Russia. This alliance was part of a larger group of countries known as the Second Coalition that fought against France. During this war, the Ionian Islands were taken back with help from Russia. A new government, called the Septinsular Republic, was set up there under Ottoman rule.
Key People and Details
The Treaty of Paris used three different ways to write dates. These were the French Revolutionary calendar, the Islamic calendar, and the Gregorian calendar.
The main person who signed for France was Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord. For the Ottoman Empire, the main signer was Seyyid Mehmed Said Galip Efendi.
After this treaty, the Ottoman Empire and France continued to have good relations. They even signed more trade agreements with Ottoman states along the Barbary Coast. These states included Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya.
