Triune is a small place in eastern Williamson County, Tennessee. It is not an official town with its own government, so it's called an unincorporated community. Triune is located about halfway between the cities of Franklin and Murfreesboro.

The community sits along the Wilson Branch, which is part of the Harpeth River. Important roads like State Route 96 and U.S. Route 31A/41A meet here. Triune is also just north of where these roads connect with Interstate 840.

Triune's Early History

The first non-Native American person known to settle in the Triune area was William Jordan. He came from Virginia and built a log cabin here in 1796. In the early 1800s, the community started to grow.

From Hardeman's Crossroads to Triune

At first, the area was called Hardeman's Crossroads. This name came from an early landowner. By the 1820s, the community had many buildings. These included stores, saloons, and leather shops. Some large farms, called plantations, had their own mills and cotton gins. A cotton gin is a machine that quickly separates cotton fibers from their seeds.

In 1830, Hardeman's Crossroads got its own post office. Later, the community was called Flemingsburg. The name Triune came from the Triune Methodist Church. This church was built in 1849 and was the first church building in the community. Triune was also home to five schools built between 1820 and 1845.

Triune During the Civil War

During the Civil War, Triune saw a lot of fighting. In 1862, soldiers from the Confederate Army were stationed in the area. There was military activity here related to the Battle of Stones River in December 1862.

Union Occupation and Skirmishes

After the Confederates lost the Battle of Stones River, Union Army forces took over Triune. They built forts at the crossroads to protect the area. From April to June 1863, there were several small battles, called cavalry skirmishes, in Triune. In one skirmish in June, Confederate forces managed to break through the Union lines.

Sadly, because of the fighting in 1863, several buildings were destroyed by fire. These included the Methodist and Baptist churches, some homes, and a girls' school called the Porter Female Academy. By the 1880s, Triune had 57 people living there.

The Bostick Female Academy

Dr. Jonathan Bostick, a plantation owner from Mississippi, wanted to help build a new girls' school in Tennessee. He left money in his will for this purpose when he died in 1868. It took a long time for his wishes to be carried out. There was even a legal case that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Finally, in 1892, the Bostick Female Academy was built on 11 acres of land in Triune. It opened in 1893. This school was a boarding school (where students live at the school) and a day school (where students go home each day). It taught up to 75 girls. Around 1900, more public schools became available. This meant fewer families needed private schools like the Bostick Academy.

In 1904, the Hardeman Academy, which was a public school, burned down. The Bostick Female Academy building then became the public school for Triune. It served as the local school until the mid-20th century.

Today, Triune has a factory that makes equipment for harvesting tobacco.

Important Buildings in Triune

Triune has several historic and interesting buildings.

  • The Bostick Female Academy building is now a private home. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.
  • The Triune Methodist Church was built in 1874. It stands on the same spot as the first church building. It is another important 19th-century landmark.
  • Several homes built in the early 1800s were still standing in 1988.

Castle Gwynn

A more recent landmark in Triune is Castle Gwynn. This building looks like a 12th-century Welsh border castle. It was built as a private home starting in 1980. Today, Castle Gwynn is famous for hosting the Tennessee Renaissance Festival. This is a fun event that celebrates the Renaissance period and happens every May.
