That older village is sometimes called Old Troy. The new town was first known as New Troy. A weekly newspaper began publishing in Troy in 1892.
For a short time in the 1990s, Troy changed its name to Troy Aikman, Texas. This was done to honor Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, who helped his team win the Super Bowl. Signs on Interstate 35 at the city limits showed this temporary name change.
