The Trumpeter Islets are two small islands located off the southwestern coast of Tasmania, Australia. These islands are not home to any people. Together, they cover an area of about one hectare, which is roughly the size of a large sports field.
These islets are found about 6 kilometers (about 3.7 miles) from where the Port Davey river meets the huge Southern Ocean. They are part of a larger group of islands called the Trumpeter Islets Group. The islets are also a special part of the Southwest National Park and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Site. A World Heritage Site is a place recognized by the United Nations for its unique natural or cultural importance.
Amazing Animals of the Trumpeter Islets
The Trumpeter Islets are a very important place for many different animals, especially birds. They are part of the Port Davey Islands Important Bird Area. This means that BirdLife International, a group that studies birds, has identified this area as crucial for birds that come here to breed and raise their young.
Seabirds and Waders
Many types of seabirds and waders (birds that wade in shallow water) use these islets as their breeding grounds. Some of the birds that have been recorded nesting here include:
- Little penguins: About 1,000 pairs of these small penguins make their homes here.
- Short-tailed shearwaters: Another 1,000 pairs of these seabirds, known for their long flights, also breed on the islets.
- Pacific gulls
- Silver gulls
- Sooty oystercatchers
- Black-faced cormorants
- Caspian terns
Other Wildlife
Besides the many birds, you can also find the Tasmanian tree skink on the Trumpeter Islets. This is a type of lizard that lives in trees.
