Tullio Serafin (born September 1, 1878 – died February 2, 1968) was a famous Italian conductor. He was once the Musical Director at a very important opera house called La Scala in Milan. Serafin was known for helping many young opera singers become stars, including the legendary Maria Callas.

Biography

Tullio Serafin was a leading Italian opera conductor with a long and successful career. He was known for bringing back many older 19th-century operas, especially those in the bel canto style by composers like Bellini, Rossini, and Donizetti. These operas then became popular again in the 20th century.

Serafin had an amazing reputation for teaching young opera singers. He helped develop the talents of famous singers like Renata Tebaldi and Maria Callas.

He was born in Rottanova, a small town near Venice, Italy. He studied music in Milan. Serafin started his career playing the viola in the orchestra at La Scala, Milan. He played under the famous conductor Arturo Toscanini. Later, Serafin became Toscanini's assistant.

When Toscanini left La Scala to work in New York, Serafin took over as Music Director. He held this important role from 1909 to 1914, and again from 1917 to 1918. He also returned briefly after World War II, from 1946 to 1947.

In 1924, Serafin joined the conducting team at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He stayed there for ten years. After that, he became the artistic director of the Teatro Reale in Rome.

Throughout his long career, Serafin helped many important singers. These included Rosa Ponselle, Magda Olivero, Joan Sutherland, Renata Tebaldi, and most notably Maria Callas. He worked with Callas on many recordings, helping her become one of the greatest opera singers ever.

Maestro Serafin was also very popular in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He conducted 368 opera performances of 63 different operas at the Teatro Colón between 1914 and 1951. This included many operas that are not often performed today.

Serafin played a big part in adding new works to the opera world. He conducted the first performances in Italy of operas by composers like Alban Berg, Paul Dukas, and Benjamin Britten. He also led the very first performances of new operas by Italian and American composers. His goddaughter was the soprano singer Claudia Pinza Bozzolla.

Serafin made many recordings throughout his career, helping to preserve his interpretations of famous operas for future generations.
