Twin Lakes, Lake County, Colorado facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Twin Lakes is a beautiful area in Colorado, known for its two large, connected lakes. These lakes were carved out by ancient glaciers, which are like huge, slow-moving rivers of ice. They are located about 15 miles south of a historic town called Leadville, Colorado.

The water in Twin Lakes comes from Lake Creek, a smaller river that flows into the Arkansas River. The lakes are very important because they act like a giant storage tank, holding water for people to use in the Front Range area of Colorado. Both the east and west lakes are popular spots for fun activities like boating and fishing.

Twin Lakes is also the name of a small community nearby. This community is called a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the government for counting people, but it's not an officially organized town with its own local government. It's located in Lake County, and about 204 people lived there in 2020.

The area around Twin Lakes has a long history. Lake County, where Twin Lakes is located, was one of the very first counties created in Colorado back in 1861. It was even named after the Twin Lakes!

The Twin Lakes area is so special that a part of it, called the Twin Lakes District, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This means it's recognized as an important historical site.

Geography of the Twin Lakes Area

The Twin Lakes and the community of Twin Lakes are about 15 miles south of Leadville, which is the main town in Lake County. The community is bordered by major roads: U.S. Route 24 (US 24) to the east and Colorado State Highway 82 (SH 82) to the south.

About 4 miles west of the community is the original settlement of Twin Lakes. The large Twin Lakes Reservoir is located south of SH 82. SH 82 goes west over Independence Pass for about 40 miles, leading to Aspen. US 24 goes north to Leadville and south about 20 miles to Buena Vista.

The Twin Lakes area is quite high up, ranging from about 9,200 feet to over 9,800 feet above sea level. This is a bit lower than Leadville, which is even higher. Mount Elbert, the tallest mountain in Colorado, stands directly west of the community, reaching a height of 14,433 feet. It's only about 6 miles west of the center of the Twin Lakes community.

The Twin Lakes community itself covers an area of about 1.66 square miles, with a small part of that being water. This is much smaller than the actual Twin Lakes themselves!
