Biography of Twin Shadow

Early Life and Music Start (1983–2009)

George Lewis Jr. was born on March 30, 1983, in the Dominican Republic. He grew up in Florida. His first experience with music was singing in his church choir.

Around the year 2000, he moved to Boston. There, he started a band called Mad Man Films. He played with Joseph Ciampini on drums and Zak Longo on bass. Mad Man Films released two albums on their own.

In 2006, Lewis wanted to do more than just record music for plays and movies. He moved to Brooklyn, New York. This is where he started his solo music project, Twin Shadow.

First Album: Forget (2010–2011)

Twin Shadow's first album, Forget, came out on November 15, 2010. It was released by Terrible Records. Chris Taylor from the band Grizzly Bear produced the album.

Forget was very popular with music critics. Many magazines and websites listed it as one of the best albums of the year. Pitchfork ranked it at number 26, and Stereogum at number 32.

The album's sound was described as "steeped in 1980s new wave." It had "haunting synth textures" and "sophisticated melodies." People also noted its "R&B intimacy" and "poetic lyrics." Rolling Stone magazine named Twin Shadow their "Band of the Week" in October 2010.

Second Album: Confess (2012–2013)

On July 10, 2012, Twin Shadow released his second album, Confess. He produced this album himself. He found inspiration for the songs after being in a motorcycle accident in Boston.

Two songs from the album, "Five Seconds" and "Patient," became part of a music video story. This story was inspired by Lewis's 2012 novel, The Night of the Silver Sun.

The A.V. Club described Confess as having "Morrissey-esque yelps" and "Human League-worthy choruses." They said Twin Shadow used his influences in a new way. The album kept the "humid fog" from Forget, but the music was "brighter, louder, and sharper."

Confess reached No. 54 on the Billboard 200 chart. It also reached No. 18 on the Top Rock Albums chart.

Eclipse and Night Rally (2014–2016)

Twin Shadow wanted to make an album that was easier for everyone to enjoy. He felt his earlier work was too "elitist." This new album was called Eclipse. It was his first album with a major record label, Warner Music.

Carl Wilson from Billboard magazine noticed a change in Twin Shadow's sound. He moved away from "foggy layers of synths and drum machines." Instead, he used a more modern sound.

Eclipse also featured much less guitar playing. Lewis made this choice on purpose. The song "To the Top" was used in the trailer for the movie Paper Towns.

On April 17, 2015, Twin Shadow and his band were in a tour bus crash. The driver and drummer Andy Bauer were seriously hurt. Lewis had surgery on his hand after the accident.

On July 28, 2015, Twin Shadow released a free online mixtape called Night Rally. He also announced a tour with the same name. Because of the drummer's injuries, the band changed their live show. They used samples and a drum machine to keep time. Twin Shadow toured the United States and Canada. He also opened for Death Cab for Cutie on part of their US tour.

Night Rally included songs recorded between 2010 and 2014. While recovering from the bus crash, Lewis looked through his old music files. He wrote that finding these old recordings helped him look back at the past five years. He realized how much music he had made. He also found songs he didn't understand why he never finished.

Caer, "Hollow Days", Broken Horses (2018)

Twin Shadow released his fourth studio album, Caer, on April 27, 2018. This was his last album with Warner Bros. On October 26, 2018, he started his own music label called Cheree Cheree.

He released the single "Hollow Days" on his new label. This song included bachata sounds from his home country, the Dominican Republic. An EP (a shorter album) called Broken Horses was released on December 26, 2018.

Self-Titled Album: Twin Shadow (2021)

Twin Shadow released his fifth album, Twin Shadow, on July 9, 2021. This album was also released on his own label, Cheree Cheree.

According to Paste magazine, this album was a big change in his sound. Lewis explored the sounds of old soul and punk music that he grew up with. He also embraced his Dominican heritage. Parts of the album were recorded at FAMA Studios in the Dominican Republic.
