About Twin Shadow

Early Life and Music Beginnings

George Lewis Jr. was born in the Dominican Republic. He grew up in Florida. His first experience with music was singing in his church choir.

Around the year 2000, he moved to Boston. There, he started a band called Mad Man Films. They released two albums. In 2006, Lewis moved to Brooklyn, New York. This is where he started his solo music project, Twin Shadow.

The Forget Album (2010–2011)

Twin Shadow's first album, Forget, came out on November 15, 2010. Chris Taylor from the band Grizzly Bear produced the album.

Forget was praised by music critics. Many described its sound as "1980s new wave" music. It had "haunting synth textures" and "sophisticated melodies." Rolling Stone magazine even named Twin Shadow their "Band of the Week" in October 2010.

The Confess Album (2012–2013)

On July 10, 2012, Twin Shadow released his second album, Confess. He produced this album himself. He found inspiration for the songs after being in a motorcycle accident. Two songs from the album, "Five Seconds" and "Patient," became a music video story. This story was inspired by a novel Lewis wrote.

Critics said Confess had "Human League-worthy choruses." They noted that Twin Shadow used his influences in a new way. The album kept the "humid fog" sound from Forget. But the music was "brighter, louder, and sharper."

The Eclipse Album (2014–2016)

Twin Shadow wanted to make his music more accessible. So, he created the album Eclipse. This was his first album with a major record label, Warner Music. On this album, he used fewer synthesizers and drum machines. He also played less guitar, choosing a more modern sound.

In March 2015, NPR streamed the album. Twin Shadow also performed live on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" show. A song from Eclipse, called "To the Top," was used in the movie trailer for Paper Towns.

In April 2015, Twin Shadow and his band were in a tour bus accident. Lewis had surgery on his hand after the crash.

Later that year, on July 28, 2015, Twin Shadow released a free online mixtape. It was called Night Rally. This mixtape had recordings from 2010 to 2014. He found these old songs while recovering from his accident. He said it gave him a look back at the past five years of his music.

Recent Albums: Caer and Twin Shadow (2018–2021)

Twin Shadow released his fourth album, Caer, on April 27, 2018. This was his last album with Warner Bros. Later that year, he started his own music label called Cheree Cheree. He released a song called "Hollow Days" on this new label. This song mixed the sounds of bachata music from his home country, the Dominican Republic, with American songwriting. An EP (a shorter album) called Broken Horses also came out in December 2018.

His fifth album, also called Twin Shadow, was released on July 9, 2021. It came out on his own label, Cheree Cheree. This album shows a big change in his sound. It goes back to the soul and punk music he grew up with. He even recorded parts of the album in the Dominican Republic.
