Sky Tonia Ferreira (born July 8, 1992) is an American singer, songwriter, model, and actress. When she was a teenager, Sky started sharing videos of herself singing her own songs on Myspace. This led to her being discovered by producers Bloodshy & Avant. She signed a record deal with Parlophone in 2009.
Her first music collection, an extended play called As If!, came out in 2011. It mixed electropop and dance music. Her second EP, Ghost (2012), had a different sound. It featured simpler songs and collaborations with Jon Brion and Shirley Manson. This EP included the popular song "Everything Is Embarrassing", which she wrote with Dev Hynes.
After some delays, Sky's first full album, Night Time, My Time, was released in October 2013. The first song from it was "You're Not the One". This album was different from her earlier music. It explored indie rock with some synth-pop sounds. Critics really liked the album. In the same year, she started acting in the movie The Green Inferno. She continued acting in films and other projects. She also released new songs like "Downhill Lullaby" (March 2019) and "Don't Forget" (May 2022). These songs are from her upcoming second album.
Sky's early music was more dance-pop. Her newer projects explore acoustic, new wave, and mostly indie rock styles. Her songs first talked about being young and relationships. Now, they often discuss personal feelings and more grown-up themes. Besides music and acting, she has also worked as a fashion model.

Sky Ferreira's Early Life
Sky Tonia Ferreira was born on July 8, 1992, in Venice, Los Angeles. Her family background includes Native American, Brazilian, and Portuguese heritage.
Sky was mostly raised by her grandmother. Her grandmother was the personal hairstylist for Michael Jackson for over 30 years. Sky shared that she grew up around him and spent holidays with him. She did not realize how famous he was until she was 13. Sky showed interest in singing when she was a child. With Michael Jackson's encouragement, her grandmother enrolled her in opera lessons.
Sky left high school after her second year.
Sky Ferreira's Career Journey
Sky Ferreira started by sharing demo songs she wrote on her Myspace page. Before her 15th birthday, she wrote to producers Bloodshy & Avant. She asked them for a recording contract. She said they offered her a deal "kind of right off the bat" after seeing her profile. In 2009, she signed with Parlophone. She began working on her first album, which she said she started when she was 14. In 2010, she also started working in film and modeling. She appeared in the movie Putty Hill and in magazines like Dazed and Interview.
First Music Releases: As If! and Ghost
After releasing songs like "17" and "One", Sky announced her first album would come out in January 2011. "One" reached number 64 on the UK Singles Chart. Her song "Obsession" reached number 37 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. These album plans changed. Instead, she released an extended play (EP) called As If! in March. A writer from MuuMuse praised her "vocal and musical versatility." They called the EP a "rock solid 5-track collection of next-level crunchy pop cuts." Around this time, Sky was in an advertisement for Calvin Klein's "CK One" products. She appeared with Cassie Ventura. The next year, she was photographed for the cover of Vs. magazine. She also appeared in an Adidas commercial with rappers Big Sean and Snoop Dogg.
In November 2011, Sky announced her first album would be released in 2012. A main song was planned for February. She was working with Jon Brion, Greg Kurstin, and Shirley Manson on the project. In early 2012, Sky said her album would be called Wild at Heart. She confirmed songs like "24 Hours" and "Swamp Girl" would be on it. "Lost in My Bedroom", an "electro pop" song, appeared online in March. After releasing the music video for "Red Lips" in June, she said she renamed the album I'm Not Alright.
Her first album was still not released. So, Sky announced her second extended play, Ghost, would come out in October. It reached numbers 8 and 71 on the US Billboard Top Heatseekers and Alternative Albums charts. Its second song, "Everything Is Embarrassing", was a big hit. Katherine St. Asaph from Pitchfork said it could be Sky's "breakout moment." She praised the song's "snappy, crisply sung dance-pop." Sky performed the song on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in January 2013. The song "Lost in My Bedroom" was on Ghost. It was also featured on an episode of ABC's Grey's Anatomy in December.
Night Time, My Time and Acting Roles

In June 2013, Sky starred as Angel in the short film IRL. This film showed a realistic look at young life in New York. That month, she again renamed her first album I Will. She said it would be released "later this summer." She mentioned it would have "ten up-tempo songs, all still pretty electronic." She added that it sounded more "pop-rocky live." It was renamed again to Night Time, My Time. It was announced for release on October 29, 2013, by Capitol Records.
When it came out, music critics gave it good reviews. On Metacritic, the album received an average score of 79 out of 100. This means it got "generally favorable reviews" from 30 critics. Rolling Stone magazine listed it as the fifth-best debut album of 2013. They noted its strong mix of synth-pop with a grunge-inspired indie rock sound. The album was also listed as the 25th best album of the year by Complex. The album first appeared at number 45 on the US Billboard 200 chart. "You're Not the One" was the main song released from Night Time, My Time on September 24, 2013.
In September, Sky played Kaycee in the independent film The Green Inferno. In October, Sky had to cancel the last week of her tour with Vampire Weekend. This was because she had a vocal cord hemorrhage. She later said it was caused by a vocal node. In November, Sky and Icona Pop were announced as opening acts for Miley Cyrus' Bangerz Tour. This tour started on February 14, 2014. Later that month, she released her third extended play, Night Time, My Time: B-Sides Part 1. In December, Sky became the spokeswoman for the hair care brand Redken. She also sang as a guest with Ariel Pink on his song "My Molly". A music video for it was released on December 23 of that year.
On February 20, 2014, during her third performance opening for the Bangerz Tour, Sky fell onstage. She split open her shin. After the show, she was taken to a hospital and received 60 stitches. Because of this injury, she had to temporarily leave the tour. However, she returned shortly after. On November 20, 2014, during her North American tour, Sky performed a new song called "Guardian".
On July 16, 2014, Sky announced on Twitter that she was working on her second album. She described the album's sound as "more aggressive." She worked with Ariel Rechtshaid and Justin Raisen, who helped produce Night Time, My Time. She also worked with Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes from the band Primal Scream. Sky also wanted to work with Gesaffelstein. She appeared in the 2016 comedy-drama film Elvis & Nixon. She also appeared in The Trust, which starred Nicolas Cage and Elijah Wood.
Sky confirmed the name of her second album on April 7, 2015. On May 12, 2015, she announced she would release a film. It was co-written and directed by her frequent collaborator Grant Singer. A new song would come with it, and the album was planned for later that year. Jimmy Choo announced on June 4 that Sky would be the face of their new perfume, Illicit. She worked with Primal Scream on the song "Where the Light Gets In". It was released on February 1, 2016, from their album Chaosmosis. On April 25, 2016, it was announced that Sky would appear in the 2017 sequel to David Lynch's TV series Twin Peaks. In October 2016, she was cast in Jonas Åkerlund's film Lords of Chaos. This photo shoot was a "visual introduction" to her next album. Sky appeared in Edgar Wright's 2017 film Baby Driver. She played the mother of the main character, Baby. She also sang a cover of the Commodores song "Easy" for the film's soundtrack.
In 2018, she said, "My silence should not be confused for negligence. I deeply care and put everything I have into my music. Including all of my earnings. I won't put out something that I don't stand by or the bare minimum."
Recent Music and Future Plans
On March 21, 2019, Sky announced the song "Downhill Lullaby", which was released on March 27. In July, she performed a new song called "Descending" at the Pitchfork Music Festival. The song "Leash" was released on December 5. Sky also shared her plans to tour live and act more in 2025. She stated that her second album is planned for release in 2025.
The Free Sky Ferreira Movement
In 2021, when her second album was not released, Sky hinted that her record label might be stopping it. She claimed Capitol Records was holding back the album and music videos. Because of this, fans of Sky started the Free Sky Ferreira campaign. This was similar to the Free Fiona campaign for singer Fiona Apple. Fans used the hashtag "#FreeSkyFerreira" online to share awareness about Sky's issues with Capitol.
In 2023, after "Don't Forget" was released, it became clear that her second album would still not come out. In August 2023, fans bought a billboard in Times Square. It claimed Sky Ferreira was being "held hostage" by her record deal. Sky agreed with the billboard's message. She posted "It's true" on an Instagram story about a post from The Fader covering the billboard.
One month later, in September, fans arranged for a plane to fly a banner over the Capitol Records Building in Hollywood. The banner read "Free Sky Ferreira." In November, fans noticed Sky was no longer listed on Capitol Record's website. Capitol did not comment at first. However, Sky later clarified in December 2024 that she had indeed been dropped by Capitol Records.
Sky Ferreira's Musical Style
Sky Ferreira is mainly a synth-pop singer. Her music has also been described as dance-pop, indie pop, indie rock, alternative rock, and art pop. Her early work included elements of dance-pop and electropop. This was especially heard in songs from As If! and Ghost. The Ghost EP also had elements of acoustic and new wave.
Her early songs often talked about being young and relationships. Andrew Unterberger from Popdust said "17" showed a "girl-gone-wild tale as a near-horror story." He noted that "One" was about a "breakdown of connection in a relationship." As her career continued, Sky explored more indie rock sounds. These were common in her first album, Night Time, My Time. Sky's singing voice is described as a contralto.
Sky Ferreira is also a feminist. This has influenced her work. She has said, "I feel like I'm doing a bad job of being a feminist if I'm not making someone angry."
Musical Influences
Sky Ferreira has mentioned many artists who influenced her music. These include Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, Fiona Apple, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Gwen Stefani, Sonic Youth, Alice Cooper, Nancy Sinatra, Cat Power, Blondie, Hole, Elliott Smith, Kate Bush, My Bloody Valentine, Carly Simon, Françoise Hardy, and the Runaways.
Sky Ferreira's Philanthropy
In July 2014, Sky Ferreira performed at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in New York City. This concert raised money for the David Lynch Foundation. Sky announced that the money would help fund Transcendental Meditation (TM) programs. These programs are for students at risk, veterans with PTSD, women who have experienced domestic violence, and others. Sky said that practicing TM "sort of saved my life."
In December 2016, Sky performed at a benefit concert called We Rock with Standing Rock. This was to support the Dakota Access Pipeline protests.
