Sky Tonia Ferreira (born July 8, 1992) is an American singer-songwriter, model, and actress. When she was a teenager, Sky started sharing videos of herself singing her own songs on Myspace. This led to her being discovered by music producers Bloodshy & Avant, and she signed a recording contract with Parlophone in 2009.

She released her first collection of songs, called an extended play (EP), As If!, in 2011. This EP mixed sounds from electropop and dance music. Her second EP, Ghost (2012), had a more simple pop sound. It included songs she worked on with Jon Brion and Shirley Manson, as well as the popular song "Everything Is Embarrassing".

Sky's first full-length album, Night Time, My Time, came out in October 2013. It was different from her earlier music, mixing indie rock with synth-pop sounds. The album was praised by music critics. In the same year, she also started acting, appearing in the movie The Green Inferno. Sky's music has changed over time, from dance-pop to more acoustic and indie rock styles. Her songs now often talk about personal feelings and growing up. Besides music and acting, she has also worked as a fashion model.

Early Life

Sky Tonia Ferreira was born on July 8, 1992, in Venice, Los Angeles. Her family background includes Native American, Brazilian, and Portuguese heritage.

Sky was mostly raised by her grandmother. Her grandmother was the personal hairstylist for the famous singer Michael Jackson for over 30 years. Sky shared that she grew up around Michael Jackson and spent holidays with him. She didn't even realize how famous he was until she was 13 years old! Sky loved singing as a child. With Michael Jackson's encouragement, her grandmother enrolled her in opera lessons. Sky left high school after her second year.

Career Highlights

Sky Ferreira started by sharing demo songs she wrote on her Myspace page. Just before her 15th birthday, she wrote a letter to music producers Bloodshy & Avant. She says they offered her a recording contract "kind of right off the bat" after seeing her profile. In 2009, she signed with Parlophone and began working on her first album. In 2010, she also started acting in the independent film Putty Hill and appeared in magazines like Dazed and Interview.

Early Music: As If! and Ghost

After releasing songs like "17" and "One", Sky announced her first album would come out in 2011. Her song "Obsession" became popular on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Instead of a full album, she released an extended play (EP) called As If!. Critics liked her "vocal and musical versatility" and called it a "rock solid 5-track collection of next-level crunchy pop cuts." Around this time, Sky also appeared in ads for Calvin Klein's "CK One" products. The next year, she was on the cover of Vs. magazine and in an Adidas commercial with rappers Big Sean and Snoop Dogg.

In November 2011, Sky said her first album would be released in 2012. She worked with producers like Jon Brion and Shirley Manson. In early 2012, she mentioned album titles like Wild at Heart and I'm Not Alright.

Since her album was still not out, Sky announced her second EP, Ghost, would be released in October. It did well on the US Billboard Top Heatseekers and Alternative Albums charts. The song "Everything Is Embarrassing" from this EP was a big hit. Critics said it could be her "breakout moment." Sky performed this song on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in January 2013. Another song from Ghost, "Lost in My Bedroom," was even featured on an episode of ABC's Grey's Anatomy.

It was released on October 29, 2013, by Capitol Records. The album got great reviews from music critics. Rolling Stone magazine called it one of the best debut albums of 2013. It mixed synth-pop with a grunge-inspired indie rock sound. The album reached number 45 on the US Billboard 200 chart. The song "You're Not the One" was the main single from the album.

In September, Sky acted as Kaycee in the independent film The Green Inferno. In October, she had to cancel the last week of her tour with Vampire Weekend. This was because she had a vocal node, which affected her voice. In November, Sky and Icona Pop were announced as opening acts for Miley Cyrus' Bangerz Tour, which started in February 2014. She also released another EP called Night Time, My Time: B-Sides Part 1. In December, Sky became the spokeswoman for the hair care brand Redken. She also sang on Ariel Pink's song "My Molly."

On February 20, 2014, during the Bangerz Tour, Sky fell on stage and hurt her shin. She needed 60 stitches. Because of this injury, she had to take a short break from the tour but returned soon after. In November 2014, she performed a new song called "Guardian" during her North American tour.

On July 16, 2014, Sky announced on Twitter that she was working on her second album. She said it would sound "more aggressive." She worked with the same producers as her first album, Ariel Rechtshaid and Justin Raisen, and also with Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes from the band Primal Scream. Sky also appeared in the 2016 comedy-drama film Elvis & Nixon and The Trust, which starred Nicolas Cage and Elijah Wood.

In May 2015, Sky announced she would release a film and a new song. Jimmy Choo also announced that Sky would be the face of their new perfume, Illicit. She worked with Primal Scream again on the song "Where the Light Gets In," released in February 2016. In April 2016, it was announced that Sky would appear in the 2017 sequel to David Lynch's TV series Twin Peaks. In October 2016, she was cast in the film Lords of Chaos. Sky also appeared in Edgar Wright's 2017 film Baby Driver, playing the mother of the main character. She also sang a cover of the Commodores song "Easy" for the film's soundtrack.

In 2018, she shared that her quietness shouldn't be seen as not caring. She said she puts all her effort and earnings into her music and won't release anything she doesn't truly believe in.

Fans of Sky Ferreira have shown their support by funding a plane to fly a "Free Sky Ferreira" banner over the Capitol Records building. They also paid for a billboard with the same message in Times Square. In November 2023, Sky left Capitol Records.

On December 2, 2024, Sky announced a new song called "Leash". She wrote and co-produced this song for the movie Babygirl. She also said she plans to tour and act more in 2025.

Musical Style

Sky Ferreira is mainly known for her synth-pop music. Her style has also been described as dance-pop, indie pop, indie rock, alternative rock, and art pop. Her early songs, especially from As If! and Ghost, had elements of dance-pop and electropop. The Ghost EP also included sounds from acoustic and new wave music.

Her first songs often talked about being rebellious and teenage romance. For example, the song "17" was seen as a shocking story about a wild girl. "One" was about feeling disconnected in a relationship. As her career continued, Sky started to use more indie rock sounds, which you can hear a lot in her first album Night Time, My Time. Sky's singing voice is described as a contralto, which is a deep female voice.

Julianne Escobedo Shepberd from Rolling Stone wrote that Sky's songs are catchy. They are also covered in fuzzy and synth sounds, which reminds people of artists like Siouxsie Sioux and the band Harmonia. Karolina Ramos from The GW Hatchet compared Sky to the singer Lorde. She felt both artists talk about modern love, desires, and insecurities in a deep and honest way. She also compared Sky's music to 1980s pop music. Her deep, smooth voice is sometimes compared to Lana Del Rey. However, Sky can also sing softer songs like "Sad Dream," showing her vocal range and gentle side.

Andrew Unterberger said that Sky is one of the most talented singers and creative songwriters working today. He mentioned that delays in her album release were due to "bad marketing, label issues, and her own desire for perfection." He also noted that the many times she renamed her album showed her struggles with her musical identity over the years.

After becoming friends with singer Miley Cyrus in 2013, the media and public started paying a lot of attention to Sky. Sky is a feminist, and this has influenced her work. She once said, "I feel like I'm doing a bad job of being a feminist if I'm not making someone angry."

Musical Inspirations

Sky Ferreira has said that many artists have inspired her music. Some of these include Madonna, Prince, Fiona Apple, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Gwen Stefani, Sonic Youth, Alice Cooper, Nancy Sinatra, Cat Power, Blondie, Hole, Elliott Smith, Kate Bush, My Bloody Valentine, Carly Simon, Françoise Hardy, and the Runaways.

Helping Others

In July 2014, Sky Ferreira performed at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in New York City. This concert helped raise money for the David Lynch Foundation. Sky announced that the money would go towards Transcendental Meditation (TM) programs. These programs help students who are at risk, veterans with PTSD, women who have experienced domestic violence, American Indians with diabetes, and people who are homeless or in prison. Sky said that TM "sort of saved my life." In December 2016, she also performed at a concert called We Rock with Standing Rock to support the Dakota Access Pipeline protests.
