Tyenna is a small country area in Tasmania, Australia. It's located about 81 kilometers (50 miles) west of Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania. Tyenna is also about 44 kilometers (27 miles) west of the town of New Norfolk. In 2016, only 43 people lived in Tyenna.

Tyenna sits on the Tyenna River. It used to be a busy community, but now it's much smaller.

History of Tyenna

Tyenna was officially named a "locality" in 1959. People believe its name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning "bandicoot."

Early Mentions and Settlers

Tyenna was first mentioned in records as early as 1896. At that time, a paper was presented about possible land routes to the west coast of Tasmania.

Many people had already moved to the area by 1918. They started clearing the thick forests. Tyenna was officially made a town in that year.

Timber Industry and Growth

Early timber workers built sawmills in Tyenna. These mills used the Tyenna River and Marriots Falls Creek for power.

Before the towns of Fitzgerald and Maydena were built, Tyenna was an important stop. It was where miners traveling to Adamsfield for osmiridium could get supplies.

At its busiest, Tyenna had many facilities. It had at least two hotels and two dance halls. There was also a shop that included a post office. The town had a school, a cricket ground, and a blacksmith's shop.

Farming and Transport

During the 1930s, farmers grew hops along the river. Hops are plants used to make beer. They were processed in special buildings called oast houses.

After processing, the hops were sent to Hobart by train. Other farm products like raspberries and currants also traveled by rail to Hobart.

The Tyenna Post Office opened on August 1, 1893. It served the community for many years before closing in 1957.

Bushfires and Today

Sadly, bushfires have destroyed much of the old town of Tyenna. However, there are still many small farms along the main road.

In spring, these farms become bright with Vansion daffodils. These flowers have grown wild in the area over time.

Geography of Tyenna

The borders of Tyenna are mostly natural lines. These include survey lines and the tops of hills, known as ridge lines.

Roads in Tyenna

Route B61, also called Gordon River Road, passes through Tyenna. It runs from the north-east part of the area to the south-east. This road helps people travel in and out of Tyenna.
