Tyler Shaan Adams (born February 14, 1999) is an American professional soccer player. He plays as a midfielder for the English club AFC Bournemouth and for the United States national team. Tyler can also play as a full-back or winger.
Tyler started his career as a young player in the New York Red Bulls academy. He became a professional with New York Red Bulls II when he was 16. A year later, he joined the main New York Red Bulls team. In January 2019, Tyler moved to RB Leipzig in Germany. Then, in July 2022, he joined Leeds United in England.
Tyler played for the U.S. at different youth levels. He made his debut for the senior national team in 2017. In 2022, he was named the U.S. Soccer Player of the Year.

Club Career Highlights
Starting in Youth Soccer
Tyler joined the Red Bulls Academy in 2012. He played for their under-13, under-14, and under-16 teams. This was before he became a professional player.
Playing for New York Red Bulls II
On March 19, 2015, Tyler signed with New York Red Bulls II. This is the reserve team for the main club. He played his first game for them on April 4, 2015. It was a 4–1 win, which was the first victory for the team. Tyler played regularly for NYRB II in 2016. He helped them win the 2016 USL Cup Final with a 5–1 victory.
Joining New York Red Bulls

Tyler played his first game for the main New York Red Bulls team on July 23, 2015. It was a friendly match against Premier League champions Chelsea. He scored a goal in that game, helping the Red Bulls win 4–2.
He signed his first senior team contract on November 3, 2015. Tyler made his first MLS appearance on April 13, 2016. He became a regular starter for the Red Bulls in 2017. On August 15, 2017, he helped New York win a big game. They came back from behind to beat FC Cincinnati 3–2. This win helped them reach their first Open Cup final since 2003. Tyler scored his first two MLS goals on September 27, 2017.
On March 13, 2018, Tyler scored the first goal in a 3–1 win over Club Tijuana. This helped his club reach the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time.
Moving to RB Leipzig
First Season in Germany (2018–19)
Tyler joined RB Leipzig in Germany in January 2019. He was reunited with his former coach, Jesse Marsch. He started his first league game on January 27, a 4–0 win. On February 16, he made his first assist in the Bundesliga. He missed some games in April due to an injury. Before that, Leipzig had not lost a single game when he was playing. Tyler returned to the team on May 16. He started in the DFB-Pokal final, which Leipzig lost 0–3.
Later Seasons with Leipzig (2019–2022)
An injury kept Tyler out for the summer of 2019. He returned for the last game before the winter break. On March 10, he made his UEFA Champions League debut. This was a big game against Tottenham Hotspur, which Leipzig won 3–0.
On August 13, 2020, Tyler scored the winning goal for Leipzig. It was a 2–1 win against Atlético Madrid. This goal helped the club reach the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time ever.
Playing for Leeds United
Tyler joined Leeds United on July 6, 2022. He signed a five-year contract. He made his league debut for Leeds on August 6. It was a 2–1 home win against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Tyler played very well in the midfield for several months. However, he hurt his hamstring in March and had surgery. He did not play for the rest of that season.
Joining AFC Bournemouth
On August 20, 2023, Tyler signed with Premier League club AFC Bournemouth. He signed a five-year deal with them.
International Career
Tyler has played for the United States at many youth levels. This includes the under-15, under-17, and under-20 teams. He played in all games at the 2015 CONCACAF Under-17 Championships. This helped the U.S. team qualify for the 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
In May 2017, Tyler played every match for the United States at the 2017 FIFA Under-20 World Cup. This tournament helped him become a key player for the New York Red Bulls. On November 14, 2017, Tyler played his first game for the senior national team. He played the full game in a 1–1 draw with Portugal. On September 11, 2018, Tyler scored a goal against Mexico in a friendly match.
In November 2022, Tyler was named captain of the United States squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This made him the youngest captain at the tournament. He was also the youngest American captain since 1950. On January 13, 2023, he was voted the 2022 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year. This was after he led the American team to the knockout stages of the World Cup.
About Tyler's Life
Tyler Adams was born in Dutchess County, New York. His mother is Melissa Russo. Tyler often says his success comes from his mother's strong support. For example, his mother would drive him over 150 miles round trip to the Red Bulls facility. She did this before Tyler was old enough to drive himself. Melissa raised Tyler on her own for most of his early years. Later, Melissa married Daryl Sullivan, and his three sons became important to Tyler's life. Tyler's father is of African American descent. His stepfather, Daryl Sullivan, coached soccer at high school and college levels. Tyler graduated from Roy C. Ketcham High School in Wappingers Falls, New York. He also owns a local soccer club called "Hudson Valley Hammers" in the USL2 league.
