Uri is a town in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. This is a special part of India. Uri sits next to the Jhelum River. It is also close to the border with Pakistan.
Where is Uri Located?
Uri is found at the start of the beautiful Kashmir Valley from the west. It lies along the Jhelum Valley Road. This road used to connect Uri to other important cities.
Uri is about 76 miles (122 km) from Srinagar. It is also 42 miles (67 km) from Muzaffarabad. And it is 49 miles (79 km) from Poonch.
Uri's History
A famous Sikh commander named Hari Singh Nalwa built a fort in Uri. This was between 1820 and 1823.
Later, in 1846, Raja Gulab Singh became the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir. Uri then became a part of the Muzaffarabad district.
In October 1947, some groups from Pakistan entered the area. They took control of Muzaffarabad and Uri. But soon after, India sent troops. These troops took back Uri by mid-November. Muzaffarabad became part of Pakistan. Uri then joined the Baramulla district.
Uri Attack in 2016
On September 18, 2016, a group of four attackers targeted an Indian Army base in Uri. This happened early in the morning. There was a long gun battle. All four attackers were stopped.
People and Culture in Uri
In 2011, Uri had a population of 9,366 people. About 71% were males and 29% were females.
Most people in Uri can read and write. The average literacy rate is 88.46%. This is higher than the national average. For males, it is 95.27%, and for females, it is 70.02%.
About half of the people in Uri follow the Islam religion. Around 40% are Hindus. And about 9% follow Sikhism.
