Valeriy Borzov's Athletic Journey
Valeriy Borzov was born in Sambir, which is now in Ukraine. He began his career in track and field in 1968. He quickly became well-known in the sprinting world. In 1971, he won both the 100-meter and 200-meter sprint races at the European Championships in Helsinki. He had already won the 100-meter championship in 1969. At that time, he matched a European record of 10.0 seconds for the 100-meter dash.
Olympic Success in Munich (1972)
At the 1972 Munich Olympics, Valeriy Borzov had a memorable performance. Two American favorites, Eddie Hart and Rey Robinson, missed their 100-meter race. This happened because of a misunderstanding about the start time. Interestingly, Borzov himself almost missed his own race! He had fallen asleep in the stadium. His coach woke him up just as the race was about to begin.
Borzov went on to win the 100-meter sprint quite easily. His winning time was 10.14 seconds. He then won the 200-meter race with great skill. A picture of Borzov winning the 200-meter heats at these Olympics was chosen for the Voyager Golden Record. This record was launched into space on two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. He also earned a silver medal as part of the Soviet 4 × 100-meter relay team. He left Munich with three medals and the title of the fastest human in the world.
Continuing His Sprinting Career
Between the 1972 and 1976 Olympics, Borzov focused more on his studies and playing soccer. Even so, he still managed to win his third straight 100-meter title at the European Championships in 1974.
At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, he finished third in the 100-meter race. He earned a bronze medal with a time of 10.14 seconds. This was his fourth Olympic medal. In the 4 × 100-meter relay, his team won another bronze medal.
A lasting injury made it impossible for Borzov to compete in his third Olympic Games. He decided to end his athletic career in 1979. In 1977, he married Ludmilla Tourischeva. She was a four-time Olympic champion in gymnastics.
Valeriy Borzov's Political Career
Valeriy Borzov's journey into politics began in the 1970s. He was a member of the Komsomol of Ukraine, which was a youth organization. From 1980 to 1986, he served as one of the secretaries for the Central Committee of the Ukrainian Komsomol.
Leadership Roles in Sports and Government
From 1991 to 1998, Borzov was the president of the Ukrainian Olympic Committee. He also became a member of the International Olympic Committee in 1994. He held an important position in the Government of Ukraine. He was the cabinet minister for Youth and Sports from 1990 until 1997. From 1998 to 2006, he was a member of the Ukrainian parliament.
Involvement in Ukrainian Politics
After being elected to parliament in 1998 with the People's Movement of Ukraine (known as Rukh), he changed political groups. He moved from the Rukh group to the "Reforms Center" group between 1998 and 1999. Later, in 1999, when the Hromada parliamentary group dissolved, Borzov was one of the first to join the new Batkivshchyna group in the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine's parliament). He stayed with this group almost until the end of that parliamentary term. In 2001, Borzov joined the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (united). He remained with this party for the 2002 elections and became a full member in 2003.
