Valeriy Pylypovych Borzov (born October 20, 1949) is a famous Ukrainian athlete and politician. He was a super-fast sprinter from the Soviet Union. He won two gold medals at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. He was also the president of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine and a government minister.

Valeriy Borzov's Early Career and Achievements

Valeriy Borzov was born in Sambir, which is now part of Ukraine. He started his career in track and field in 1968. He quickly became well-known in the world of sprinting.

Becoming a European Champion

In 1969, Valeriy won the 100-meter race at the European Championships. He ran so fast that he equaled the European record of 10.0 seconds. Then, in 1971, he won both the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints at the European Championships in Helsinki. This made him a top contender for the Olympics.

Olympic Glory in Munich 1972

At the 1972 Munich Olympics, Valeriy had an exciting moment. He almost missed his own 100-meter race because he fell asleep! Luckily, his coach woke him up just in time. He then won the 100-meter sprint easily.

He also won the 200-meter race with amazing speed. A picture of him winning the 200-meter race was even chosen for the Voyager Golden Record. This record was sent into space on the Voyager spacecraft in 1977. It was meant to show alien life what humans are like! Valeriy also helped his team win a silver medal in the 4 × 100-meter relay. He left Munich with three Olympic medals.

Continuing Success and Later Years

After the 1972 Olympics, Valeriy focused more on his studies and playing soccer. But he still managed to win his third 100-meter title at the European Championships in 1974.

At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, he won a bronze medal in the 100-meter race. His team also won another bronze medal in the 4 × 100-meter relay. This brought his total Olympic medals to five!

A serious injury later stopped Valeriy from competing in his third Olympic Games. He decided to end his sprinting career in 1979. In 1977, he married Ludmilla Tourischeva. She was a famous gymnast who won four Olympic gold medals herself.
