Vedat Dalokay was a famous Turkish architect. He also served as the mayor of Ankara, a big city in Turkey. He lived from 1927 to 1991.
Early Life and Education
Vedat Dalokay was born in Elazığ, Turkey, in 1927. His parents were İbrahim Bey and Emine Hanım. His family was Alevi Kurdish and had moved from Pertek.
He finished his first and second schools in Elazığ. Then, he went to Istanbul for college. In 1949, he graduated from the Architecture department at Istanbul Technical University. His teachers included famous architects like Clemens Holzmeister and Paul Bonatz.
After college, he started working for the government. In 1950, he moved to Paris, France. He planned to study city planning at Sorbonne University. However, he did not finish his studies there.
Career as Mayor
In 1973, Vedat Dalokay was chosen as the mayor of Ankara. He was a member of the Republican People's Party (CHP).
As mayor, he worked to improve the city. In 1975, he asked the Soviet Union for help. He wanted to build a better public transport system. He also wanted to create more affordable homes in Ankara.
In 1977, Dalokay and other mayors from his party made an important statement. They talked about "social municipalism." This idea focused on how city governments could help people more. Dalokay served as mayor until the 1977 elections. After that, Ali Dinçer took over as mayor.
Awards and Architectural Work
Vedat Dalokay won many awards for his designs in Turkey. He also received international awards. One of his famous international projects was the Islamic Development Bank building in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, completed in 1981.
He designed the Kocatepe Mosque in Ankara in 1957. His design won a competition, but it was not built. Later, a changed version of his design was used for the Faisal Mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan. This mosque is very well-known.
In Pakistan, he also designed other buildings that were not built. He also designed the Summit Minar monument in Lahore. Vedat Dalokay is seen as a big influence on Pakistani architecture.
Death
Vedat Dalokay died in a car accident on March 21, 1991. The accident happened near Kırıkkale, Turkey. His wife, Ayçe Dalokay, also passed away in the accident. Their son, Barış Dalokay, was injured and died a few days later on March 27, 1991.
