History of Vienna
Vienna became the main town for Maries County in 1855. It was probably named after the city of Vienna, Austria. However, some old stories say it was named after "Vie Anna," the daughter of a local judge. A post office has been open in Vienna since 1856.
In 2002, the Maries County Jail and Sheriff's House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical building.
Geography of Vienna
Vienna is located in the middle of Maries County. It sits where two important roads, US Route 63 and Missouri Route 42, meet. The city is between the Gasconade River to the east and the Maries River to the west. Another city, Rolla, is about 25 miles southeast of Vienna.
The city covers about 1.07 square miles of land. A very small part of this area is water. The eastern side of Vienna drains into the Gasconade River. This river flows north and joins the Missouri River. The western side of Vienna drains into Fly Creek. This creek flows into the Maries River, which is part of the Osage River system. The Osage River also flows north to the Missouri River.
