What is Viscount Melville Sound?

Viscount Melville Sound is like a wide channel of water. It is a key part of the Parry Channel. This channel helps separate large islands. To its south are Victoria Island and Prince of Wales Island. To its north are the Queen Elizabeth Islands.

Where is it Located?

This sound connects different parts of the Arctic. To the east, it leads into Barrow Strait. Beyond that is Lancaster Sound, which opens into Baffin Bay. To the west, the sound connects to the M'Clure Strait. This strait then leads to the wider Arctic Ocean and the Beaufort Sea.

Part of the Northwest Passage

Viscount Melville Sound is a very important waterway. It is a major part of the famous Northwest Passage. This passage is a sea route through the Arctic. It connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Many explorers have tried to navigate it.

A Bit of History

In 1854, a British explorer named Edward Belcher was in the sound. He was searching for another explorer, John Franklin. During his journey, Belcher had to leave his ship. The ship was called HMS Resolute. He abandoned it in the sound.
