WSG Tirol is a professional association football club from Wattens, Tyrol, Austria. The club plays in the Austrian Football Bundesliga, which is the top football league in Austria.

WSG Tirol was founded in 1930. It is part of the Tirol Football Association. Since 2019, the team has played its home games at Tivoli Stadion Tirol in Innsbruck. In the 1969–70 season, they played in the Nationalliga, which was the highest division in Austrian football at that time.

Club History

Early Years and Name Changes

The club started in 1930. Over the years, it has had a few different names. It was known as SC Wattens from 1930 to 1953. Then it became SV Wattens from 1953 to 1971. From 1984 to 2019, it was called WSG Wattens.

Time in Top Leagues

The club's most successful period was between 1968 and 1971. During these years, they played in the Austrian Football Bundesliga.

Merger and Return

From 1971 to 1984, the club joined with FC Wacker Innsbruck. They formed a new team called SSW Innsbruck. This combined team won the Bundesliga five times. They even reached the quarter-finals of the 1977-78 European Cup. Even during this merger, the original club kept its youth teams separate.

After 1984, WSG Wattens played in the Austrian Regional League West and the First League. These are lower divisions in Austrian football.

Promotion to Bundesliga

In 2019, WSG Wattens was promoted to the Bundesliga. After this big step, the club changed its name to WSG Swarovski Tirol. However, in 2021, the company Swarovski stopped its sponsorship. Because of this, the name "Swarovski" was removed from the club's name. The club has been known as WSG Tirol ever since.

Home Stadium

Gernot Langes Stadion

WSG Tirol used to play their home matches at Gernot Langes Stadion in Wattens. This stadium could hold 5,500 fans. In the 2010–11 season, about 289 people attended their home games on average.

The stadium was sometimes used for international games. For example, a friendly match between Saudi Arabia and Nigeria was played there in 2010. In 2013, the stadium was renamed Gernot Langes Stadion. This was done to honor Gernot Langes, who was the club's president for a long time.

Moving to Tivoli Stadion Tirol

The Gernot Langes Stadion did not meet the requirements for the Bundesliga. Because of this, the club planned to build a new, modern stadium. It was planned to have 6,000 seats by the summer of 2023.

While the new stadium was being planned, the club started using the Tivoli Stadium in Innsbruck. They have been playing their home games there since 2019.
