A Look Back in Time: Waddington's History
Waddington has a long and interesting history. It was once a smaller part of a much larger area called the ancient Lordship of Bowland. This Lordship included a big Royal Forest and many smaller manors. It covered a huge area across the old borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire.
The Tempest Family and Their Story
The Tempest family were important lords of Waddington for a very long time, starting in the 1200s. They are known for helping to build the local church in Waddington. One famous member of this family was Sir Nicholas Tempest. He was a special officer for the Forest of Bowland. Sadly, he was severely punished in 1537 because he took part in a big protest called the Pilgrimage of Grace.
King Henry VI's Secret Stay
During a time of wars in England called the Wars of the Roses, King Henry VI was hiding from his enemies. After losing a battle, he was secretly kept safe by his supporters in different houses across northern England. He stayed at Waddington Hall for about a year. But in 1464, his enemies found him and captured him there.
How Waddington is Governed
Waddington is part of the local government area called Ribble Valley Borough Council. It joins with nearby villages like West Bradford, Grindleton, and Sawley to form a special area called the Waddington and West Bradford ward. This ward had about 2,933 people living in it in 2011. The people in this ward elect two councillors to represent them on the council. Currently, these councillors are Paul Elms and Bridget Hilton, both from the Conservative Party.
