Waheed Murad (Urdu: وحید مراد; born October 2, 1938 – died November 23, 1983) was a famous Pakistani film actor, producer, and writer. He was also known as the Chocolate Hero because of his charming looks and great acting skills. Waheed Murad is considered a very important actor in the film industry of South Asia. He greatly influenced filmmaking in the Indian subcontinent.

Born in Sialkot, Pakistan, Waheed Murad studied at S.M. Arts College in Karachi. He then earned a master's degree in English literature from the University of Karachi. He started his film career with a small role in the 1959 film Saathi when he was 21 years old. One of his films, Armaan, which he also produced, was a huge success. Waheed Murad had many successful films that ran for a long time in cinemas. He was a beloved 'Chocolate Hero' in Pakistan during the 1960s and 1970s. He acted in 125 films and won 32 film awards.

In November 2010, 27 years after his passing, the Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari honored him. Waheed Murad was given the Sitara-e-Imtiaz. This is a very high award given by the State of Pakistan for achievements in arts, literature, and science. On October 2, 2019, Google celebrated his 81st birthday with a special Google Doodle on its homepage. In 2022, his song Ko Ko Korina was featured in the American TV series Ms. Marvel (TV series).

Early Life and Education

Waheed Murad was the son of Shireen Murad and Nisar Murad, a film distributor. He completed his graduation from S.M. Arts College, Karachi. Later, he earned a master's degree in English literature from the University of Karachi. His father's family was from Sialkot and was part of the cultural elite.

Film Career Highlights

Waheed Murad began his film career in 1961. He joined his father's company, 'Film Art', as a producer. His first film as a producer was Insaan badalta hai. For his second film, Jab se dakha hai tumhein, he cast Darpan and Zeba. When Darpan often arrived late, Zeba suggested that Waheed should act as the hero in his next film.

Waheed was not sure about acting in his own movies. However, his friend Pervaiz Malik also suggested it. Waheed agreed, but only if Zeba would be his co-star. Zeba accepted this idea. So, Waheed first appeared in a supporting role in the 1962 film Aulad. This film was directed by his friend S.M. Yousuf. Aulad was highly praised by critics and won the Nigar award for best film that year.

His first movie as a main actor was Heera aur pathar. He won the Nigar award for best actor for this film.

In 1966, Waheed Murad produced and starred in Armaan. This film broke all previous box office records. It ran for 75 weeks in theaters, which was a very long time. The songs in the film were sung by Ahmed Rushdi. Murad received two Nigar awards for Armaan: one for best producer and one for best actor.

In 1967, he was the main actor in films like Devar bhabi, Doraha, Insaaniyat, and Maan baap. Between 1964 and 1968, Murad and Pervaiz Malik made several successful films. These included Heera Aur Pathar, Armaan, Ehsaan, Doraha, and Jahan tum wahan hum. The team of Waheed Murad, Pervaiz Malik, Masroor Anwar, Sohail Rana, Ahmed Rushdi, and Zeba created many popular movies.

In 1969, Waheed produced, wrote, and directed the movie Ishaara. It was released in 1969. Other actors in the film included Shabnam, Rozina, Aliya, Talish, and Mustafa Qureshi. Murad won a Nigar award for best actor for this film.

During his 25-year career, Waheed Murad acted alongside many actresses. Some of them were Zeba, Shamim Ara, Rani, Naghma, Aaliya, Sangeeta, Kaveeta, Aasia, Shabnam, Deeba, and Babra Sharif. He acted in a total of 124 films. Two of these films were released after his death. Out of these, 38 were black and white films, and 86 were in color. He also made six guest appearances, including his first role in Saathi in 1959. He acted in 115 Urdu films, 8 Punjabi films, and 1 Pushto film. He earned 32 film awards, including awards for best producer and best actor.

Film Art Productions

Waheed Murad produced eleven films under his father's company, Film Art. At that time, he was the youngest film producer in the Pakistani film industry. Most of the films he produced were very successful, running for a long time in cinemas. During the 1960s and early 1970s, he produced films like Insaan Badalta Hai (1961), Armaan (1966), Ehsaan (1967), Naseeb Apna Apna (1970), and Mastana Mahi (a Punjabi film from 1971). After Mastana Mahi, he produced only one more film, Hero, which was released after his death.

As a director, he directed and produced Ishaara (1969), starring Deeba.

In Waheed Murad's films, most of the songs he acted to were sung by Ahmed Rushdi. Ahmed Rushdi sang over 200 songs for him, both duets and solos. Other singers who provided their voices for Waheed Murad included Mehdi Hassan, Masood Rana, Saleem Raza, Akhlaq Ahmed, Mujeeb Aalam, Asad Amanat Ali Khan, Bashir Ahmad, Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, and A Nayyar.

Later Years

By the late 1970s, Waheed Murad started appearing in supporting roles. Many leading actresses were not allowed to work with him in main roles by their husbands. Waheed Murad faced some difficulties in his personal life. His wife Salma moved to the United States.

In 1981, Waheed Murad had a health issue with his stomach. He had surgery to save his life. Many of his fans came to the hospital to donate blood for him. After the surgery, he recovered but lost a lot of weight. Even then, his friends Iqbal Akhtar and Iqbal Yousuf cast him in their movies. Waheed appeared in Dil ney phir yaad keya and Ghairao.

In 1983, Anwar Maqsood, a TV writer and friend, invited Waheed to his TV comedy show Silver Jubilee.

Babra Sharif shared that during the filming of a scene for Hero, Waheed lost his balance and fell. He took some time to recover before standing up again.

In July 1983, Waheed was in a car accident and got a scar on his face. A few days later, he asked his friend Pervez Malik for a role in a film. Malik told him to get better first, and then he would be the lead in his next film. Waheed replied, "You give me the role and I will get better." He was on his way to Karachi to get the scar fixed for his film Hero when he met Ilyas Rasheedi, the chief editor of 'Nigar' film magazine, at the airport.

Last Days

Waheed Murad's son, Aadil, was in Karachi staying with his grandmother. The day before his face surgery, Waheed celebrated his son's birthday. He bought many gifts for Aadil and wished him a happy year.

He returned late to spend the night at Mumtaz Ayub's home. When Waheed did not wake up, the door was opened. Waheed was found on the floor, having passed away several hours earlier. Waheed Murad was buried near his father's grave in Gulberg Graveyard in Lahore.

Personal Life

Waheed Murad married Salma, the daughter of an industrialist from Karachi, on September 17, 1964. They had two daughters, Aaliya and Sadia, and one son, (Adil). Sadly, Sadia passed away when she was a baby.

Awards and Honours

On October 2, 2019, Google celebrated Waheed Murad's 81st birthday with a special Google Doodle on its homepage for Pakistan. At the PTV Awards in 2012, on June 11th, tributes were paid to him. He was given the PTV Pakistani Legend Award, which his son Adil Murad accepted. The Government of Pakistan named a street and an intersection after him in Lahore on August 16, 2021.
