A Journey Through Waremme's Past
Waremme has a very long history! People lived here even thousands of years ago.
Ancient Times: Early Settlers and Romans
Scientists have found signs of people living near Waremme during the Neolithic (New Stone Age) and Bronze Age. This means humans were here building homes and communities a very long time ago.
The main Roman road that connected Bavai to Cologne passed right through Waremme. This was an important route for trade and travel. Archeologists have also discovered ancient Roman burial mounds called Tumuli and large Roman villas (country houses) nearby. They even found a special Roman horse burial.
The Middle Ages: A Growing Town
The first time we see the name Woromia (which is Waremme's old name) in writing was in the year 965.
On February 5, 1078, Woromia became part of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. This was a powerful church-state. Waremme came with its castle, five mills, and six breweries. By 1215, Waremme had grown into a town with 815 people.
Because Waremme was close to the Duchy of Brabant, it often faced attacks. The Duke of Brabant raided the town many times. This caused Waremme to be burned down and rebuilt more than once.
In the 14th century, the town started to become more important. It built a market place and a hospital. Waremme even made its own coins and held important meetings.
Later History: Fires and Changes
In 1468, Charles the Bold attacked the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and burned Waremme again.
In the 16th century, Waremme was named one of the 21 "bonnes villes" (main cities) of the prince-bishopric. This showed its importance. In 1748, a quarter of the city was accidentally destroyed by fire.
In 1792, during the French Revolution, French troops entered Waremme. They closed the convents (religious houses). Three years later, the Prince-Bishopric of Liège was dissolved, and Waremme became part of France.
Modern Times: Growth and Wars
The 19th century was a good time for Waremme. Railways were built, connecting the city to other important places. Two sugar refineries and several schools were also built.
In 1904, a company called Ateliers Moës-Freres started making engines and locomotives in Waremme. They continued to build things there until 2013.
World War I didn't cause much damage to Waremme, except for its old surrounding walls. However, World War II was much worse. About half of the city was destroyed by air raids, just days before the end of the war. At that time, Waremme had about 5,000 people.
