Exploring The Waterways Neighbourhood
The Waterways is located in the northern part of Oxford. It's easy to find, as the Oxford Canal runs through it. On one side, you'll find the Cherwell Valley railway line. On the other side, beyond the railway, are beautiful open spaces like Port Meadow and the River Thames.
Getting Around The Waterways
The neighbourhood connects to other parts of Oxford. In the south, it joins Frenchay Road, which is part of older Oxford. At the northern end, Elizabeth Jennings Way links The Waterways to the Woodstock Road (A4144).
Nature and Green Spaces
Just south of The Waterways, there's a special green area called the Trap Grounds. This spot is a nature reserve with wetlands and woodland. It's a perfect place for wildlife! The wetland gets its water from a stream that flows through The Waterways. This stream starts from a "lake" that was once a clay pit.
A Look at The Waterways' History
The Waterways neighbourhood was built on an interesting site. Before the homes were here, it was the location of the British Motor Corporation's Osberton Radiator Factory. This factory made parts for cars. The new homes were built between the years 2000 and 2006.
Community Life at The Waterways
The people who live in The Waterways have a strong community. They have a group called the Waterways Residents Association (WRA). This group helps represent everyone living in the neighbourhood. There's also The Waterways Management Company (WMC). This company looks after most of the public areas and some of the homes in the estate.
Art and Bridges on the Canal
Two main roads in The Waterways cross the canal using modern, red brick bridges. These are on Frenchay Road and Elizabeth Jennings Way. In 2016, these bridges became a canvas for amazing art! A series of murals were painted on them. These murals show local history and wildlife, and they even include drawings by children from the area.
How the Murals Project Happened
This cool art project was organized by local residents. Many groups helped make it happen, including The Canal and Riverside Trust (C&RT), Oxford City and County Councils, and Thames Valley Police. Even the local boaters helped out! The project received funding from Tesco's "Bags of Help" program.
