About Wendover Airport
Wendover Airport is an important part of the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems. This plan helps decide which airports get funding. The airport has seen many passengers over the years. For example, in 2010, over 50,000 people boarded flights here.
A Look Back: Airport History
The airport has a rich history, starting as a military base.
Military Past: Wendover Air Force Base
Wendover Airport is built on the site of the old Wendover Air Force Base. This base was very active during World War II. Most military activities stopped there in the mid-1960s.
From Military to Civilian Use
In 1976, the military decided they no longer needed the base. So, on June 16, much of the area became a public airport for the city of Wendover, Utah.
Later, in the 1980s, the Air Force used the airport again for training exercises. These exercises were called "Red Flag." However, they stopped using it after 1986. In the late 1990s, Tooele County took over ownership of the airport from the city.
Many original buildings from World War II are still standing at the airport. These include hangars and other structures. One famous hangar is the "Enola Gay" B-29 hangar.
Wendover Airport in Movies
Did you know parts of the 1997 movie Con Air were filmed at Wendover? They used a Fairchild C-123K Provider aircraft for the flying scenes. Today, a group called Historic Wendover Airfield is working to restore the old parts of the airfield.
Airport Features and Planes
Wendover Airport covers a large area, about 793 hectares. It is located 1,291 meters above sea level.
Runways and Operations
The airport has two runways with asphalt surfaces:
- Runway 8/26 is 3,048 meters long and 46 meters wide.
- Runway 12/30 is 2,439 meters long and 30 meters wide.
In 2011, the airport had over 5,000 aircraft operations. Most of these were general aviation flights (private planes). Some were commercial flights, and some were military flights.
Aircraft Based at Wendover
At that time, seven aircraft were based at the airport. Most of these were jet planes, and some were single-engine planes. Wendover is an uncontrolled airport, meaning it does not have a control tower.

Currently, there are no regular scheduled airline flights from Wendover. However, Swift Air offers special charter flights. These flights bring tourists to local casinos in the area. They use Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737-400 aircraft. On average, the airport sees one charter flight each day.
