Village History and Formation
West Hampton Dunes sits on a barrier island. This island was once part of Fire Island. But in 1931, a big storm called a nor'easter split the island. This storm created a new water channel known as Moriches Inlet.
The village decided to become its own official village in 1993. This was done to help protect the area better. West Hampton Dunes had been hit hard by powerful storms. These included the Great Hurricane of 1938, the "Perfect Storm" in 1991, and another nor'easter in 1992.
After becoming a village, its first mayor, Gary Vegliante, took action. He wanted to make sure the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers helped protect the beach. The Corps had built structures called groynes nearby. These structures caused a lot of beach erosion in West Hampton Dunes. The mayor sued, and the Corps agreed to help. They started adding sand back to the beach. This helped the area recover and led to new buildings being built.
In 2007, a movie about the village's history was shown at the Hamptons Film Festival. It was made by a resident named Yale Nelson.
Local Police Force
In 1996, West Hampton Dunes created its own police force. This was done to better serve the community. The West Hampton Dunes Police Constabulary has about 12 members. These members include a commissioner and two sergeants.
The officers are trained as peace officers. They learn their skills at police academies in Suffolk County. They also get special training for traffic duties. This includes using radar and managing car crashes.
