Westchester is a special kind of community in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It's called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that looks like a town but doesn't have its own local government. Westchester is also a neighborhood within the larger Miami metropolitan area.

In 2020, a nearby CDP called University Park joined with Westchester. This made Westchester much bigger, almost doubling its size and population. According to the 2020 census, about 56,384 people live here.

Westchester is located about 10 miles (16 km) west of downtown Miami. It sits at an elevation of 8 feet (2.4 meters) above sea level.

Where is Westchester Located?

Westchester has several neighbors. To the north, you'll find Sweetwater and Fontainebleau. To the east is Coral Terrace. South of Westchester are Olympia Heights and Westwood Lakes. Finally, to the west is Tamiami.

The area that used to be University Park CDP is now the western half of Westchester. Florida International University is also located in the northwest part of Westchester.

How Big is Westchester?

The United States Census Bureau says that Westchester covers a total area of 8.11 square miles (20.99 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a small part, about 0.15 square miles (0.40 square kilometers), is water.

The Miami Hoshuko is a special weekend Japanese school. It holds its classes at the Iglesia Bautista de Coral Park (Coral Park Baptist Church) in Westchester. This school helps children learn Japanese on weekends. It was started in 1984.
