Wichtrach is a town in Switzerland. It is located in the Bern canton. This town is part of the Bern-Mittelland administrative district.

The Story of Wichtrach

Wichtrach is a fairly new town. It was formed on January 1, 2004. This happened when two smaller towns, Niederwichtrach and Oberwichtrach, joined together.

The church in Oberwichtrach was first mentioned in records way back in 1180. Both Wichtrach villages were first written about in 1180. They were called Wichtracho back then.

On January 1, 2010, Wichtrach became part of a new administrative area. This new area is called Verwaltungskreis Bern-Mittelland.

Wichtrach's Location and Land

Wichtrach covers an area of about 11.6 square kilometers (4.5 square miles). A big part of this land is used for farming. About 63.4% of the town's area is farmland.

Forests cover about 22.3% of Wichtrach. These are mostly thick, natural forests. About 13.1% of the land has buildings or roads on it. This is where people live and travel.

A small part, about 0.9%, is made up of rivers or lakes. Only a tiny bit, 0.2%, is land that cannot be used for anything.

Wichtrach has a population of about 4,017 people as of December 2011. A small number of people, about 5.4%, are foreign nationals. This means they live in Wichtrach but are not Swiss citizens.

Most people in Wichtrach speak German. About 94.7% of the population uses German as their main language. A smaller number speak Italian (1.1%) or French (0.5%).

In 2008, the population was almost evenly split between males and females. About 50.2% were male and 49.8% were female.
