History of Herbligen
Herbligen was first written about in the year 1302. But people lived in this area much earlier!
Long ago, there was a large old fort on the Eggrain and Wolfenburg hills. This shows that people settled here a very long time ago. In the Late Middle Ages, many rich people from nearby cities like Bern and Thun owned land in Herbligen.
In 1665, Herbligen and the nearby village of Brenzikofen decided to share a school. They built a schoolhouse at Helisbühl. This school was used for almost 200 years, closing in 1834. A new school was built in 1973.
Starting in the 1980s, many people who worked in Bern and Thun began moving to Herbligen. This caused a lot of new houses to be built. Today, Herbligen is mostly a "bedroom community". This means that most people who live there travel to other cities for their jobs.
