Growing Up and Learning Music
Wilbert Roget II grew up in Philadelphia. He started playing the piano when he was only four years old. In high school, he became very interested in how music could help tell stories in video games. He was especially inspired by music from Japanese video games and anime. Composers like Nobuo Uematsu and Hitoshi Sakimoto (who worked on the Final Fantasy games) and Yoko Kanno (who scored Cowboy Bebop) were big influences. Roget went on to earn a degree in music from Yale University in 2005. There, he studied with talented teachers like Kathryn Alexander.
His Journey in Music
Starting at LucasArts
In 2008, Roget joined LucasArts as a composer. This company is known for making Star Wars games. He wrote music for games like Star Wars: The Old Republic. He also worked as a music editor on other projects. His last big project for LucasArts was for an unreleased game called Star Wars: First Assault. For this game, he recorded the music with a live orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, at the famous Abbey Road Studios. After this, he decided to become a freelance composer. This means he works for himself and takes on different projects.
Working on Big Games
As a freelance composer, Roget has created music for many popular games. These include Call of Duty: WWII, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, and Mortal Kombat 11. He also worked on smaller, independent games like Anew: The Distant Light. Roget often plays instruments like the flute, keyboard, accordion, and guitar in his own recordings. He gets ideas from classical music. For example, his Call of Duty score was inspired by works from composers like Claude Vivier and Krzysztof Penderecki. A writer for Forbes magazine, Erik Kain, said that the Call of Duty music made him an "instant fan."
Beyond Composing
Besides writing music, Roget also develops sound software. His company, Impact Soundworks, creates tools that other composers use for films and video games. He also shares his knowledge in schools. He was a visiting teacher at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He has also given talks at places like Yale University. In 2016, he wrote a piece for a carillon (a musical instrument with bells) called Island Stones. He often speaks at big events like the Game Developers Conference and PAX.
