William Lithgow

William Lithgow (born around 1582 – died around 1645) was a Scottish adventurer, writer, and explorer. He was known for his amazing journeys. He claimed to have walked about 36,000 miles (58,000 km) during his travels!

Who Was William Lithgow?

William Lithgow was born in a town called Lanark in Scotland. His father, James Lithgow, was a merchant, and his mother was Alison Grahame. William grew up to be a very curious person who loved to explore the world.

Amazing Journeys and Adventures

William Lithgow started his travels when he was young. He visited many different countries and experienced exciting things.

Early Travels

Before the year 1610, William had already explored several places. He visited the Shetland Islands, which are north of Scotland. He also traveled to Switzerland in Europe and Bohemia, which is now part of the Czech Republic.

Journey to the East

In 1610, William began a very long journey. He started from Paris, France, on March 7th.

  • He traveled to Rome, Italy, and stayed there for about a month.
  • From Rome, he explored other Italian cities like Naples and Ancona.
  • His adventure then took him to Athens, Greece, and then to Constantinople (which is now Istanbul, Turkey). He stayed in Constantinople for three months.
  • After exploring more of Greece, he sailed to Palestine. He arrived in Jerusalem in 1612.
  • Later, he continued his journey to Egypt.

Travels in North Africa and Spain

William Lithgow's adventures didn't stop there.

  • From 1614 to 1616, he explored parts of North Africa. He visited Tunis and Fez.
  • His last big journey was to Spain between 1619 and 1621. This trip ended with a difficult experience. He was arrested in Malaga because some people thought he might be a spy. He was questioned about his travels and activities.
  • He also visited the island of Crete during his many travels.

William Lithgow wrote books about his adventures. These books shared his amazing stories and what he saw in different parts of the world. He was truly a remarkable traveler!
