History of Willowbrook
Long ago, before it was called Willowbrook, this area had many willow trees and a slow, shallow stream. The name "Willowbrook" comes from these natural features. In the 1840s, a single willow tree marked the boundary of a large ranch called Rancho La Tajauta. This ranch covered all of what is now Willowbrook.
In the early days, there were many natural springs in Willowbrook. Winter rains helped ryegrass grow well. As early as 1820, a man named Anastacio Avila grazed his cattle here. By 1843, he was granted over 3,500 acres of land.
How Willowbrook Got Its Name
The first neighborhoods in Willowbrook were created in 1894 and 1895. The name "Willowbrook" was officially used in 1903 when a new area called Willowbrook Tract was recorded. A train line, the Pacific Electric Railway, had just opened nearby. The trains, known as the "Big Red Cars," stopped at 126th Street in Willowbrook. This stop helped the name become popular for the whole area.
In 1913, the first branch of the Los Angeles County Free Library opened in Willowbrook. It started in a private home and later moved to the post office building.
Life in Early Willowbrook
People who bought land in Willowbrook expected a suburban life. The lots were often very deep, sometimes 300 feet (91 meters). This attracted working-class families, especially those new to Southern California. The Big Red Cars made it easy to travel to shops in downtown Los Angeles or jobs in Long Beach and San Pedro.
During the Great Depression, many residents used their land to grow fruits and vegetables. They also raised hogs and chickens. This made the area look very rural. Even after World War II, Willowbrook kept some of its agricultural feel. The Watts Riots in 1965 caused damage to some buildings, including the community library, but the area's mix of farms and homes remained.
In the early 1980s, a plan was put in place to redevelop Willowbrook. This plan changed over 365 acres of land, adding new shops and homes. Because of this, Willowbrook now looks similar to other communities in the South Central part of Los Angeles.
