History of Winslow Township
Winslow Township is the largest town in Camden County, covering about 58 square miles. It was named after Edward Winslow Coffin. He was the youngest son of William Coffin Sr., who owned a glass factory in the 1800s. William Coffin Sr. and his son-in-law built the Winslow Glass Works in a thick pine forest.
The first meeting for Winslow Township was held in 1845. It took place at Josiah Albertson's Blue Anchor Inn. In its early days, Winslow was known for making glass. This was because the township had lots of wood, clay, and sand. These materials are important for making glass. However, by the early 1900s, the glass industry in Winslow ended.
Winslow's population grew slowly until the 1970s. Most people living there were farmers. In 1965, the Atlantic City Expressway was finished. This highway made it easier to get to Winslow. Developers started building many homes, especially in the Sicklerville area. Because of this, Winslow's population almost doubled between 1970 and 1980.
Today, about 80% of Winslow Township is part of the Pinelands National Reserve. This means that new building is limited. However, farming areas still exist in Winslow. The township uses two different phone area codes, 856 and 609. This happened when the 609 area code was split in 1999.
