History of Winsted
Winsted got its first post office in 1858. The city was named after a town called Winsted, Connecticut. The name "Winsted" is a mix of two other town names: Winchester and Barkhamsted. These towns are both in Connecticut.
A train line, known as the Luce Line, used to serve Winsted. It carried both goods and passengers. Passenger train service stopped in the 1950s. The train tracks were removed by the Chicago & North Western Railway in 1972.
Geography and Location
Winsted is in the northeast part of McLeod County. It sits on the west side of Winsted Lake. The city is about 18 miles north-northeast of Glencoe, which is the main city of the county. It's also about 26 miles east-northeast of Hutchinson. Howard Lake in Wright County is about 7 miles north of Winsted.
Main roads in Winsted include McLeod County Roads 1, 5, 6, and 9.
The city covers a total area of about 1.91 square miles. Most of this area is land. Only a small part, about 0.015 square miles, is water.

Winsted's Population in 2010
In 2010, the city of Winsted had 2,355 people living there. There were 947 households. About 596 of these were families. The city had about 1,233 people per square mile.
Most of the people in Winsted were White (97.5%). A small number were African American (0.5%), Native American (0.3%), or Asian (0.1%). Some people were from other backgrounds (0.9%) or mixed races (0.6%). About 1.8% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
About 33.4% of households had children under 18. Many households (46.9%) were married couples. The average household had 2.41 people. The average family had 3.03 people.
The average age in Winsted was 36.3 years. About 26.1% of residents were under 18. About 15.2% were 65 or older. The population was almost evenly split between males (49.3%) and females (50.7%).
Festivals and Events
Winsted hosts two main town festivals each year.
- The Winsted Winter Festival takes place in winter. It features a parade with lights and other fun activities.
- The Winsted Summer Festival happens in summer. This festival includes a parade, a street dance, and a sand volleyball tournament. They also crown a "Miss Winsted."
Winsted is also home to the Winstock Country Music Festival. This big music event helps support the Holy Trinity Catholic school system.
Since 2017, another event called the Land Castle Summer Extravaganza has been held. It takes place at the Winstock Country Music Festival grounds. This event is about ice fishing, but it happens in the summer! It includes camping, music, food, and information sessions. It's advertised as a family-friendly event.
Schools and Learning
Winsted has two school systems for students.
- The Howard Lake–Waverly–Winsted school district is the public school system. It runs Winsted Elementary School.
- The Catholic school system includes Holy Trinity High School, Holy Trinity Elementary School, and Tiny Trojans pre-school.
The Winsted Public Library is part of the Pioneerland Library System. This means it shares resources with other libraries in the area.
