Withnell is a small village in Lancashire, England. It is part of the Borough of Chorley. In 2011, about 3,498 people lived there. Withnell is located about 5 miles (8 km) north-east of Chorley and also about 5 miles (8 km) from Blackburn.
The village used to be called 'Withinhull' around the year 1160. This name means 'a hill where willow trees grow'. Withnell shares its borders with the nearby villages of Brinscall and Abbey Village.

Exploring Withnell's Nature and History
Withnell is a great place to explore nature and learn about its past.
Withnell Local Nature Reserve
Withnell has a special area called the Local Nature Reserve. This reserve follows an old railway line that is no longer used. It stretches for about 600 yards (550 meters). Since 1966, many different wildflowers, native trees, and heathers have been planted here. The reserve covers about 12 acres (4.9 hectares) and is open for everyone to walk through and enjoy.
Village Amenities and Services
Withnell has several important places for its residents. These include St. Joseph's Catholic school and church, and St Paul's Church of England church. There is also a doctor's office for Withnell and the nearby villages. You can find a pharmacy, a beauty salon, and a car sales garage in the village too.
Withnell's Past Post Office and Railway Station
The village used to have a post office, but it closed in 2008. A newsagent continued to operate from the old building for a few years before it also closed. The building was then turned into homes.
Withnell also had its own railway station in the past. However, this station closed down in 1960.
Unique Stone Discovery in Brinscall
In 2018, a special type of stone was found in the Brinscall Quarry, which is very close to Withnell. This stone was exactly what was needed to finish building the famous Basilica de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain.
