Wolf River is a small town located in Langlade County, Wisconsin, in the United States. In 2010, about 731 people lived here. This number was a bit lower than in 2000.

Several small communities are part of the town. These include Hollister, Langlade, and Markton. There's also a "ghost town" called Van Ostrand. The village of White Lake is a separate place, but it's completely surrounded by the town of Wolf River. The local fire department is run by volunteers.

How Wolf River Got Its Name

Early Beginnings

The town was first created on November 10, 1886. Back then, it was called the town of Elton. It was formed from the eastern parts of another town called Langlade. The name Elton came from Elton Larzelere. He was the son of one of the first people to settle in this area.

Changing Names and Borders

In 1896, a part of Elton became its own town, which is now called Evergreen. This change made Elton the size it is today. Later, on April 22, 1925, the town officially changed its name to "Wolf River."

It shares borders with other counties. To the north, you'll find Forest County. To the east is Oconto County. And to the south, it borders Menominee County. As mentioned, the village of White Lake is right in the middle of the southern part of the town.

The town covers a total area of about 307.9 square kilometers (about 118.9 square miles). Most of this area, about 302.5 square kilometers (116.8 square miles), is land. The rest, about 5.3 square kilometers (2.0 square miles), is water.

The Wolf River itself flows through the southern part of the town. This river is a branch of the larger Fox River. It flows southeast, passing by the community of Langlade and running east of White Lake.
