Yaxley is a village and civil parish located in the Huntingdonshire area of Cambridgeshire, England. It is about 4 miles (6 km) south of Peterborough, right off the A15 road. The village is also close to the Hampton area. It is about three miles northeast of junction 16 of the A1(M) motorway at Norman Cross.

Village History

Yaxley was first written about in the Domesday Book of 1086. This was a very old survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror. In the Domesday Book, Yaxley was called Lacheslei. It was part of the Norman Cross area in Huntingdonshire. Back then, Yaxley had one main estate and 39 households.

The Church of England Parish Church of St Peter is a very old and important building. It is listed as a Grade I building, meaning it has special historical value.

Norman Cross Prison

Norman Cross Prison was built between Yaxley and the villages of Folksworth and Stilton. It was built from 1796 to 1797. This prison was the first known camp specifically for holding prisoners of war. It was used to keep captured soldiers during the French Revolutionary Wars.

From 1801 to 1901, the number of people living in Yaxley was counted every 10 years. This was done by the UK census. During this time, the population ranged from 986 (in 1801) to 1,590 (in 1901).

Since 1901, a census has been taken every ten years. The only exception was in 1941 because of the Second World War. The population count in 2011 included the nearby area of Denton.

In 2011, the Yaxley area covered about 3,296 acres (1,334 hectares). The population density was about 1,781 people per square mile (688 people per square kilometre).

Getting Around Yaxley

Yaxley used to have its own train station, Yaxley and Farcet railway station, located east of the village. However, it closed in 1959.

Today, people in Yaxley can use a bus service. Route 5, run by Stagecoach East, goes to Peterborough city centre every half hour. It also continues to the suburb of Dogsthorpe.

Sports and Fun in Yaxley

Yaxley has a local football club called Yaxley F.C.. They play their games at Leading Drove. Some Rugby League players from Yaxley also play with the Cambridge Lions team in Cambridge.

A famous sports person from Yaxley is Niels Kristian Iversen. He is from Denmark and was the captain of the Speedway World Cup winning team.

There used to be a cycleway connecting Yaxley to Farcet. This path was later replaced to make it safer for everyone.

  • Olinthus Gregory (1774–1841): He was born in Yaxley. Olinthus Gregory was a mathematician, writer, and editor.
  • Peter Burroughs (born 1947): He lived in Yaxley for some time. Peter Burroughs ran a shop and later became an actor.
