Yoko is a super friendly magical creature. He looks like a big yellow giant with bunny ears. Yoko used to live in the park before buildings and people came. He communicates in a unique way, mostly by making sounds and gestures, and saying "Yoko" in many different tones. But somehow, Oto, Vik, and Mai always understand him! Yoko is very old in human years but young in Yoko years. He acts like a playful child, full of surprises and emotions. Granny, a character in the show, says that "Yoko only appears to children who love to play." Yoko uses his magic to change things around, like making a cloud rain in one spot or freezing a lake.

Vik is 6 years old and often the most sensible of the group. He's the smartest and knows a lot about game rules. Sometimes he finds it hard when things change suddenly, but once he understands, he's great at playing his role. Vik has brown hair, brown eyes, and tan skin. How Yoko Was Made
Bringing Yoko to Life
The idea for Yoko came from Juanjo Elordi, a director from the Basque Country in Spain. He had worked on other animated films before. In 2011, he realized there weren't many children's shows about outdoor play, especially in his region. So, he decided to create a project focusing on the benefits of playing outside and how kids interact with city environments. This led to the character Yoko.
Spanish animation companies Somuga and Dibulitoon teamed up with Wizart Animation from Russia to create the Yoko TV series. While the initial idea was Spanish, the script was developed by a team from all the studios. This made Yoko the first animated co-production between Russia and Spain.
The animators faced a fun challenge: making the characters' limbs bend in a unique way because they were designed with square shapes. They created a special animated "muscular curve" to make the characters move smoothly. The show was made for children aged 4–6 years old, with each episode lasting 12 minutes. Yoko, the main character, is a forest dweller who only says "Yoko," which means "game" in Basque. He's also special because adults can't see him, but children can!
The creators wanted the show to encourage kids to play outside. One director said there would be a short game at the end of each episode, mixing games from different cultures. This was meant to inspire children to "break away from tablets and computers" and play in the park with friends. Andy Yerkes, who worked on shows like Pocoyo, was also one of the creators.
Yoko was shown at big international events like MIPCOM in 2014 and MIPJunior in 2015. It received a lot of interest from buyers around the world. The first season, with 52 episodes, premiered in Russia in late 2016 on channels like CTC and Carousel. In Spain, it aired on RTVE's CLAN TV. A movie based on the series, called Yoko and His Friends, was also released in 2015.
Sharing Yoko with the World
After its successful launch, Yoko started broadcasting in many countries. Jetpack Distributions, a company that shares entertainment globally, helped distribute the series. In March 2017, the show began airing in Canada on BBC Knowledge, in Portugal on Canal Panda, and in India and Sri Lanka on Sun TV. It also came to Nick Jr. in Italy.
In February 2018, Jetpack Distributor made a deal with Netflix to bring Yoko to new countries, including the U.S. and the United Kingdom. The CEO of Jetpack Distribution, Dominic Gardiner, said that Yoko has a "mass global appeal" because it has magic and adventure, and it teaches kids about the value of play. The show also started airing in China on Tencent and in Latin America and the Caribbean on Nat Geo Kids.
In July 2018, the animation studios announced they were working on a second season of Yoko. This new season was released in Autumn 2018, and in Russia, it debuted in October 2019. In April 2020, a spin-off series called Maya Knows was launched. In this show, Maya and Yoko explain interesting facts about the world to children in short, educational episodes. Today, Yoko is shown in over 60 countries worldwide!
