Life and Music Journey
Early Life and Starting Music
Yves Tumor grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee. They started making music when they were 16 years old. Music was a way for them to express themselves. They learned to play drums, bass, guitar, and keyboards all by themselves.
Yves Tumor found growing up in Tennessee difficult. At age 20, they moved to San Diego. After college, they moved to Los Angeles. In 2012, they met another artist named Mykki Blanco. They then toured together for two and a half years. They traveled all over Europe and Asia.
First Music Projects
In the early 2010s, Yves Tumor made music under the name Teams. Their music was described as "post-chillwave". This was a style of electronic music. In 2015, they started the Yves Tumor project. They released their first album, When Man Fails You, that same year.
Signing with Labels
In September 2016, Yves Tumor joined PAN Records. They released their album Serpent Music with this label. Yves Tumor had worked on this album for three years. They recorded it in different cities like Miami, Leipzig, Los Angeles, and Berlin. Critics noted their music used "unsettling percussive loops" and sounds from real life.
In September 2017, Yves Tumor released a free album called Experiencing the Deposit of Faith. Soon after, it was announced that they had signed with Warp Records. This is a well-known record label. After this, Yves Tumor went on tour with a new show. It included both music and visuals.
Later Albums and Success
In September 2018, Yves Tumor released Safe in the Hands of Love with Warp Records. This album was released without any big announcement. It quickly received great reviews from music critics. One critic said the album was much bigger and more amazing than anything they had released before.
Their fourth album, Heaven to a Tortured Mind, came out on April 3, 2020. A critic from The Guardian newspaper called it "extraordinary." They said it was experimental and could fit into many different music styles.
In October 2020, Yves Tumor mentioned they had more music ready to be finished. In December 2020, they released a song called "let all the poisons that lurk in the mud seep out." This song was a collaboration with other artists. In July 2021, they released an EP (Extended Play) called The Asymptotical World. They recorded it with their bandmates. Yves Tumor toured internationally throughout 2022.
In February 2023, Yves Tumor hinted at a new album in an interview. In March 2023, their fifth album, Praise a Lord Who Chews but Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds), was released. Critics loved it, calling it a mix of "alt-rock and R&B" and "spellbinding art rock." Yves Tumor also performed at the Coachella 2023 music festival.
Music Style and Influences
Yves Tumor's early music was compared to artists like Dean Blunt and James Ferraro. They even worked with James Ferraro. However, their newer music, like Heaven to a Tortured Mind, has been compared to famous artists like Prince and David Bowie.
Yves Tumor has said that the band Throbbing Gristle was a big influence. They liked the "hypnotic trance vibes" in their music. When Yves Tumor moved to Los Angeles, a friend often played music by Chris & Cosey. This made them interested in Genesis P-Orridge and that whole music movement.
Hobbies and Interests
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Yves Tumor explored other hobbies. They became interested in designing furniture and upholstery. Upholstery is the craft of covering furniture with fabric. They said they wanted to build chairs, couches, and stools. They also mentioned wanting to learn welding.
