Important Events of 1069

  • The Harrying of the North: King William the Conqueror ruled England. Some of his English subjects, the Anglo-Saxons, rebelled against him. To stop them, King William rode with his army through northern England. They burned homes, crops, and land from York all the way to Durham. This terrible event led to the deaths of over 100,000 people, mostly because they starved or froze during the winter.
  • King William the Conqueror also started building a famous church called Selby Abbey. It was built in the Norman style.
  • In Seville, a city in Spain, a new ruler named Abbad III al-Mu'tamid took over the throne after his father died.
  • In China, the Emperor Shenzong chose a very important person named Wang Anshi to be his main advisor.

These rules aimed to make the country's money system better and to stop officials from being dishonest by paying them more. He also introduced a system called the baojia system to help with local defense.
  • The country of Vietnam began to expand its territory southwards. This movement is known as Nam tiến.
  • In Norway, King Magnus II of Norway passed away. After his death, Olav III became the only King of Norway.
  • The Seljuk Turks tried to capture a city called Konya (also known as Iconium). However, the Byzantine army fought back strongly from Syria, and the Seljuk Turks were not able to take the city.
