What Happened in the 1730s?
The Great Awakening Begins
One of the most important events in the 1730s was the start of the Great Awakening. This was a major religious movement in the British colonies of North America. It focused on personal religious experiences and feelings, rather than just strict church rules.
Many people felt a new sense of spiritual excitement. Preachers traveled around, giving powerful speeches that encouraged people to think deeply about their faith. This movement led to the growth of new churches and changed how many people practiced Protestant religions.
The Octant: A New Tool for Sailors
Around 1730, a very helpful tool called the Octant was invented. This invention happened independently, meaning two different people came up with the idea at almost the same time. John Hadley in Great Britain and Thomas Godfrey in the American colonies both created it.
The octant was used by sailors to measure the angle between the horizon and a celestial body, like the sun or a star. This measurement helped them figure out their ship's position at sea. It was a big step forward for navigation, making ocean travel safer and more accurate.
