AD 5 was a year in the Julian calendar that started on a Thursday. It was a long, long time ago! In the powerful Roman Empire, people called it the "Year of the Consulship of Messalla and Cinna." They also sometimes called it "year 758 Ab urbe condita", which means "from the founding of the city" (Rome). The name "AD 5" became popular much later, during the medieval period, when the Anno Domini way of counting years became common in Europe.
What Happened in AD 5?
Events in the Roman Empire
The Roman Empire was a huge and powerful state that controlled many lands around the Mediterranean Sea. In AD 5, several important things happened there:
Roman Influence in Britain
- The city of Rome officially recognized Cunobelinus as the king of Britain. Cunobelinus was a leader of the Catuvellauni, a strong tribe in ancient Britain. This shows how far the Roman Empire's influence reached, even without directly ruling the land yet.
Germanic Tribes and Rome
- Two Germanic tribes, the Cimbri and the Charydes, sent messengers to Rome. These tribes lived in areas north of the Roman Empire. Sending ambassadors meant they wanted to talk with Rome, perhaps about peace or trade.
Roman Army in Germania
- Tiberius, a very important Roman general and future emperor, led Roman armies to conquer a region called Germania Inferior. This was part of the Roman effort to expand their control into lands east of the Rhine River.
Important Roman Marriage
- Agrippina the Elder married Germanicus. Both were members of the powerful Roman imperial family. Germanicus was a popular general, and Agrippina was the granddaughter of Emperor Augustus. Their marriage was important for the future of the Roman ruling family.
People Born in AD 5
Many people who became famous later were born in AD 5:
- Habib the Carpenter, a Syrian follower of early Christianity.
- Paul the Apostle, a very important leader in early Christianity. He helped spread the religion widely.
- Ruzi Ying, a great-grandson of Emperor Xuan of Han. He was part of the Han dynasty in China.
- Yin Lihua, who later became an empress of the Han dynasty in China.
