Absolom Gant Jr. (born October 30, 1832 – died May 2, 1897) was an American politician from Texas. He had an interesting life, starting as a teacher and soldier before becoming a successful businessman and a state representative.

Absolom Gant Jr.'s Early Life

Absolom Gant Jr. was born on October 30, 1832, in Martin, Tennessee. His parents were Absolom Sr. and Mary Gant. Young Absolom went to school in his home state.

In 1853, when he was about 21, he served as a justice of the peace in Wayne County. A justice of the peace is a local official who handles minor legal cases and keeps the peace. Absolom Gant Jr. then earned a degree from Cumberland University in 1859. After finishing his studies, he moved to Tarrant County, Texas to work as a schoolteacher.

Serving in the Civil War

Absolom Gant Jr.'s Military Service

Absolom Gant Jr. joined the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He was a third lieutenant in Company A of the Ninth Texas Cavalry Regiment. After a big battle called the Siege of Corinth, he was promoted to captain.

However, Absolom Gant Jr. had to leave the army early because of a medical problem. He resigned his position and went home before the war ended.

Business and Family Life

Absolom Gant Jr.'s Business Ventures

After the war, Absolom Gant Jr. started a new career. He teamed up with a doctor from Weatherford, Texas, to sell medicines. Over time, he also became a real estate dealer, buying and selling land. He became the largest landowner in Parker County.

On December 18, 1867, Absolom Gant Jr. married Minerva Raines in Rusk County. Later, his family moved to Graham. There, he managed a salt mine, which was another important business for him.

Political Career

Absolom Gant Jr. as a State Representative

Absolom Gant Jr. also entered politics. On March 1, 1871, William Edgar Hughes resigned from the Texas House of Representatives. This created an open spot.

On October 31, 1871, Absolom Gant Jr. was sworn in as a state representative. He represented Young County and was a member of the Democratic Party. He served in this role until January 14, 1873. Absolom Gant Jr. passed away on May 2, 1897.
